scotty switch/ motor

Hey guys having problems with one of my downriggers. It shuts off part way up then i have to wait around 20-30 seconds before the switch will start working again.
Any of you had this problem before? sounds like the motor is working harder than usual but could also be the switch maybe??
Any help would be great... Their an older model 1106 and Im thinking i should just replace the switch

Cheers
Dave

Highly unlikely it is switch. If the power source is not delivering enough juice or if the main spool is worn from use causing the motor to work harder than it is supposed to, both could cause the circuit breaker to cut out. Check your power connections or take rigger in for servicing. Also did you pop off the motor cover and look inside to make sure you don't have a moisture problem?

Make sure your boom pulleywheel isn't seized up.

if in fact it's the motor I believe scotty will replace it for free... at least they used to....

Sounds like it is a possible thermal switch. Because you say you wait 20-30 seconds they work automatically open on overload cool and reset. They are designed to open the circuit if your motor overloads. That way if it is only a temporary condition you do not burn out the motor. If this is happening all the time I would look at getting the downrigger checked out. Look for anything brakes dragging pulley sticking even the line cutting in to the Bobbitt on the arm.

and give us a call about the riggers

Yes-- Scotty replaced both motors on my dowmrigger for free this spring-- all I paid for was shipping... great company IMO.

I was out fishing yesterday and 1 of my down riggers would not work.
The pulleys are not seized.
I even took the belt off to see if the motor would spin with no load.
There was power, I could hear the motor trying to work.

Any suggestions, my thinking is a motor problem

Had this exact problem this spring. With some help from techs at scotty and a voltage tester found out it was a relay inside. Worked fine in the morning but it would heat up in sun then the relay would get hot and stop working. Under $5 at the auto parts store.

could be one of two problems. You may have a significant voltage drop from a bad/corroded connection or a high internal resistance fault.battery connections, corroded fuses, plug and socket, rigger switch and internal motor relay can be the culprit. Bad for motor as the reduced voltage causes higher current that can burn the windings out.
IF problem still exists then it can be an internal short in the motor, either in the windings or between commutators. Under no load you may be able to "jumpstart" the motor by turning the motor on, then manually spinning the spool(watch your fingers). If it starts, allow it to run for a minute, as the brushes can sometimes clear the debris that is shorting the commutators.
Best to take advantage of the fantastic scotty warranty and have them bench test it once you eliminate any potential problems up to the downrigger plug.
