Scotty line

Which is the best scotty line to use? Im not going off shore 500ft or anything. I bought two hand crank depthmaster (or something like that) last year thinking I would use them but ended up buying some electrics this year The electrics have very thin fraying wire and the hand cranks looks like they have brand new heavy heavy stuff. I dont mind a little line hum but would be nice not to have it. Not sure if they had a old wire that was to thick that they discontinued? Or how loud and annoying it will actually be? I did hear it the other day even with the small stuff.

I would go with PowerPro 200lb. It's thinner than the Scotty line with less blow back.
you won't go back to wire. ;)

So why go to 200??

I fish 130 Tuff XT for the last 5 years and have had no problems, off shore at 200' or inside at 40' with either 12 or 15 lbs balls.

My understanding is the rubber snubber between the ball and line breaks at 75 lbs, so you can fish lighter DR line.

Any reason why you need to fish such a heavy DR line like 200PP??

Cheers

Could be the diameter is more closer to the SS and has less effect on the line counter being out of wack?

hmm so I dont know about this PowerPro... dosnt seem to popular lol. Im going to throw thick stuff on tommorw since I have it see about the drag and hum. If not, I know what to throw on there thanks :)

I use the Scotty 175# braid, smaller diameter than the 200# pp, and works just fine.

Good plan, use what you have I like wire - and the hum - but I hate rust and broken strands so I am converting to the dark side with 200# pp. spooled up 1 rigger with it already but have not tested it yet. If you get braid down the road go with the 200# PP some guys get away with different stuff but I've heard some nightmares about other brands too.

I do know Salmon do not mind the hum of that wire at all.

Does anyone use some kind of backing under their thin diameter braid? Just wondering-- I was told that if you spool to much braid on, it causes the spool to implode,(whatever that means); anyone had problems doing this. I thought if I put more line on the drum the weight would come up faster.

depth counter on manuals is completely independent of the wire/line, series of pins on the wheel that tick a gear on the counter. If you put TOO MUCH line on your drum you will have more then your counter will be out. When I spoke with scotty they said max 400 of wire, so with that thinking line would be better as it doesn't pack in as thick.

Very best,

Ian
