Scotty Downrigger Rod Holder Replacement

Maybe you should tie everyone to the boat and then tie the rods to their arms and then don't leave the dock at all. Y'all need to cut down on the boozin' if people can't simply take a rod out of a tube, 1 foot away from them. Is there an air horn that goes off when a fish bites or something? 😉😆
Haha as dumb as it sounds, it's the motion of pulling the rods out and away when there's a fish on. All it takes is a loose grip. Hurts the back anyway. I see no point in mounting trolling rods that way. Super dumb. Don't even need to be boozing. It's honestly bad geometry

I’m gonna have to definitely switch up my boom mounted set up. Wife almost lost the rod a few times trying to grab it out of the holder and it is hard on the backs for sure . Previous owner had Scotty rocket launcher set up off the stern . Might give it a go or try the dual holders .

Ok, I had two stainless rod holders in my amazon checkout, you managed to talk some sense into me. Do you ever stack? Run two rods on a side? I'm trying to figure out the best way to do it.

That's what the dual tube base is for!!!! Ugh.

If only there were an alternative for boom mounts. Like something that went under the rigger, and had like a cylindrical rod holder. Maybe even 2 per rigger? That would be awesome.

I dunno if it were me I would feel safer with a drilled bolt to keep it from twisting - there is a lot of pressure exerted on rod holders especially when fishing deep and in strong tides. I tried clamping a stainless steel rod holder on my boom - didn't work, it kept twisting. I am now going to go with drilling a through hole for a bolt attachment. My 2 bits.
agreed i was also concerned about holder twist, was trying not to drill the boom , this was one of my first holders which i drilled

Maybe Scotty needs to make a boom with a pad or the tabs welded to it. Not sure how much it would effect strength or distort the boom with heat input though, would want to purge the inside to minimize defects and stress risers inside the tube.

Doesn’t the routered out hole or shape that’s in the arm with the factory boom mount give enough of a platform to add a homemade or outsourced rod holder?

Between a hull that isn't that beamy, riggers with the 30" boom, and a dislike of the boom mounted rod holders, I mounted my Scotty HPs well back toward the transom, intending from the start to use rod holders mounted on the gunwale. I use the Orca rod holders, definitely no leaning out over the water with those. In ten years with this setup, I haven't had an Orca pop open when unwanted, nor a rigger line cut by prop. Easy to hook up cannonballs and clips by rotating the rigger forward, and I made a bamboo with a hook to retrieve the clip. About the only time I reach over the gunwale is to release a fish.

Pretty happy with this setup for a smaller boat. With the riggers mounted aft there's plenty of room to bring crab and prawn traps aboard (rod holders are removed for this work).

Setup on my boat is very similar, have never had any issues either.

Forgive my ignorance, I didn't know about that fine detail. I've never had my rod holders off the boom.
