Between a hull that isn't that beamy, riggers with the 30" boom, and a dislike of the boom mounted rod holders, I mounted my Scotty HPs well back toward the transom, intending from the start to use rod holders mounted on the gunwale. I use the Orca rod holders, definitely no leaning out over the water with those. In ten years with this setup, I haven't had an Orca pop open when unwanted, nor a rigger line cut by prop. Easy to hook up cannonballs and clips by rotating the rigger forward, and I made a bamboo with a hook to retrieve the clip. About the only time I reach over the gunwale is to release a fish.
Pretty happy with this setup for a smaller boat. With the riggers mounted aft there's plenty of room to bring crab and prawn traps aboard (rod holders are removed for this work).
