Salmon Trolling Rod Length

just picked up some new Trophy Titans in 10'6 and 11'3. Maybe its because Im a tall guy (and the boat has no shortage of deck space) but nothing like a noodled-up rod on a big spring. I would like to get something in the 7-8' range with a good baitcaster and some backbone to try hucking lures at schooling fish.

have always fished shimano 10'6" out of our 17 foot boat - other than the old days learning on the old mans 6'4" stumps. never ventured into the in-between range.

From my experience i think you have more control of a hot fish with a longer rod

The sensitivity of the longer rods and more bend allow more play with the fish, less likely to rip a hook out. Have a 10'6 Convergence and its been great, had a Fenwick Canadian Methods 10'6 but it broke repeatedly with little use. So upgraded to a Technium and really like it, better feel than the convergence but not sure yet if worth almost double the cost.

I just picked up some more backup rods a couple convergences and a couple of these Amundson rods specifically for buddies that don't know how to fish all my rods are 10.6 . The Amundson feels pretty good but we will see. I have sage g loomis and titans and love them all . Super soft rods are sweet .

10'6 fetha Styx Downrigger rod, for a combination of strength, sensitivity and durability with the carbon fibre butt end, I can't imagine using anything that is much better.

I fish alone and use Loomis 10 1/2 foot rods. You land more fish with a longer rod, as it's more forgiving while fightng the fish. Just look at how few steelheaders use short rods.

i use them convergences on my guide boat and there really nice rods for there price, couldnt go wrong with buying one

9ft and light action, prefer lighter gear all round.

Went to 9' rods when I stopped rowing cut plug and went to trolling. Medium action Shimanos and the small Shimano reels. Easier to store and handle. All this talk about by the 10'6" crowd makes me want to pull out my old rods for a day or three this summer for a comparison.

Shimano Technium's.........so worth the $$$$$ These rods are one fire. 10' -6" medium power......so sweeeeeetttt!!!!

ok fishermen what type of reel would you use to compliment a 10 1/2 ft trolling rod ? Hanging up the old peetz reels and short rods. Time to change my ways. Thanks .

Get a 4000 Shimano mooching reel and you'll be golden :)

haha "peetz" your killing me...., i have had a Shimano TDR for years and it has landed me countless salmon, i think it is 9'8" any longer then that would definitely be tough netting fish in my 16' boat, it has a good medium action , I also have always used Shimano mooching reels, just bought another 4000GT the other day, the one-way clutch is a godsend when a big Salmon is on the line, really a topnotch reel for a fraction of the cost of the big dawgs, Dont get me wrong would love a couple of Trophy or Islander mooching reels but they would look goofy on my "FUGLY" boat..,Have to wait till i can afford my sailfish i guess...
