Salmon fishing in Lake Ontario , Charter has 5 downriggers

yep counting 5 but he's running 5 rods pre side by the looks so he could be running 10 rods

no wonder there's a deck hand

they use planner boards to get wider spreads

And they never stop the boat to play the fish.

I have watched a few of these programs on TV and these fish don't fight like there cousins from the salt chuck do. Maybe one run and that's about it they come up to the boat lying on their sides. Look a lot like lake trout. Don't know why that is,, must be something to do with them living in the fresh water and not having the life cycle of salt water fish. Could you emagine running 10 rods out west and nailing a 30# fish,, me thinks one would have quite the mess going on.

Besides planer boards, they also use dipseys, lead core and single strand wire line. The idea is to cover as much area and depth as possible. I've been on a boat on Lake Ontario with 16 rods out. When you hit a fish, you can't possibly clear the gear. Don't forget they all use level winds, so you can reel forever if the drag is soft. This would never work with single action mooching reels. The limit is 5 per day, and guest on charters expect nothing less.
No hali or Lings!!
Only silvers and kings.
Be happy we are here on the coast.
