Recently on another internet fish forum site, I read an entry defending a method of snagging salmon and steelhead known as flossing as an ethical way to fish. His justification for this statement was that he had seen Mark Pendlington using this method on the TV show "Sportfishing BC". Please tell me this isn't so.

Yes it is so and so did the fly fishers on the Campbell.
Also shown on shows on the Skeena and Kitimat.
U.S. shows showed it fly fishing for Steelhead using lead weights to get the fly down.

Nothing new as this has been around probably longer than you are old.

Long leaders are not illegal.
In fact using a fly rod and lead core with 3 foot leaders is much mor productive.

Jim Teeny became famous for fly fishing for Chinook and he was flossing.

I wouldn't get the flossing debate started here. People get pretty hot over the issue as I've read on a few other forumns.

...read deeper than that of what you speak, as on a grander scale - the whole picture is way more than that. We all want a piece and we all deserve to have an opportunity to harvest from a healthy stock. If it is not a very promising yield, then shut the opportunity down. One and all, or not at all.\\

Cheers,
RVP. ;)
