I used to fish Bamberton in the early 80's on occasion and used to scratch up some smaller Springs.
Does anybody actually fish for salmon there anymore or is it truly the dead sea now?

The inside is pretty quiet but everyonce in awhile someone gets lucky. I fished there a couple of years ago and did quite well. Have not heard anything lately.

Have had some luck early (april, may) for feeder's..
usually just putting in time while prawn traps are soaking

Yes, people still fish there, but they keep the info pretty much to themselves. There can be excellent fishing at times, but that can be said about most spots. There have been some big herring spawns in the inlet in the last couple of years and some big fish hav ebeen caught.

Circa 1967-1970. Wire line and Planer, herring strip.Daily Colonist submitted weekly reports of individuals and their catches.Lots of big Springs and Coho.
Went out with the late Jim Gilbert one August afternoon, limited out,8 each. Now we wonder why theres nothing now. Used nylon stockings weighted with rocks,deep.200 pulls.
Any how downriggers today may be the ticket.
When was the last time you saw someone fishing in the winter there?

Grew up fishing it. Remember when over a dozen guides use to be there. There is probably as many fish in there now as everywhere else just got to work the sweet spots that use to produce in the old days. I would fish it more but the ramp is still crap and just gets worse. The one day in January I went out this year I got a 12lbr and heard peolple were catching in April but it's just the quiet locals working it.
Peetz rod and reel 350' on planer, strip, no flasher, produced the most and biggest for me.

Good ol Saanich inlet,I remember winning a little electrical derby there 35 years ago.Still got the Peetz rod and reel that I won around here someplace.Wire line, planer, and strip was the ticket then.Do you guys remember the old peetz counter reels?Pretty high tech back then.I remember my dad making me crank the planer up cause I couldn't trip it.Last time I fished there was the early 90's couple of small springs if I remember right.A fellow I knew did really well there jigging in a couple of the deep holes. My dad and our old neighbour used to go and fish there after work.Larry had one of those old wooden clinker boats with the putt putt motor in it.I think they just went to have a couple of beverages, and if they got a fish it was a bonus. I used to fish at Bamberton in the early to middle 80's, first light was good. I would put the gear at about 90 feet, as the day went on, would drop the gear to about 180 ore 200 feet. My favourite terminal was the Apex. I don't think I ever caught anything bigger than the low teens.

Good stories here, keep them coming.

Nov 1968 app 4pm,Cole Bay,Saanich Inlet,20 lb Spring caught on the reef, Tomic plug, one of those open clinker boats-back to Brentwood dock, darkness.

approx. 1987.Beside the marker located by the mill bay ferry terminal. My buddy and i were 13 years old jigging out of a 13 foot boston whaler. All we knew how to do was jig. About 30 feet of water. A 22 pound chinnok hit . We fought it for less than 4 mins when it came beside the boat. I threw the net into the water and it swam right into it. I was hooked ever since!

Thinking there still there, whos to varify if no one fishing there. If I was still there thats where id be come fall-winter.Caalm waters all the time. Someones prob saying shut up.

Where exactly does one launch when going out onto the Inlet? It's a beautiful place and I'd like to spend some time there - the odd fish would just be a bonus.

I was thinking the same thing. I've seen some of my favourite places in the interior get talked up on fishing forums and it's made my hair stand on end when I read it and hope the thread eventually fades off into oblivion. LOL

The Tsartlip F.N. ramp costs $8.00 i think, otherwise Hall's boathouse on the Malahat side.
