How long is the spey rod ..they are 12 plus feet usually and built to cast flies? Its not designed to to be used in a rigger ...most likely it would be broken high sticking in the boat..just my two bits......
If you value that rod, I would be listening to Derby on this one? They are not designed to withstand the pressure associated with being bent, with that constant tension associated with downrigger use. They are designed to "flex"! If the initial impact of the strike doesn't snap it, it will probably at least put a hairline crack in it, so the snap will follow soon after? Trust me... they WILL break... how do I know? Many years ago, didn't learn my leason breaking one, can you say both of my custom made rods on the same trip - SNAP!
They will fit in rod holders. My advise, with any type of fly rod... stick a fly on it, run it straight out the back, put it in a rod holder (NOT downrigger) and enjoy catching those Coho! You might even pick up a Spring and both are fun to play on that rod!
