Rod butts.

amyone know off the top of there head the size of the groove in the bottom of the butt of big ocean rods? Having a debate about rod holders here at work. I think the groove wont fit 1/4"round stock but it's cheaper shipping wise if we order that size pin stock for bottoms of rod holders. I don't think the slotted rod butts will engage properly with 1/4" stock. 3/16" is the size we've used in the past

Hi Clint r
I think you're correct. I just measured a rod I have here and the slot is tapered. The 1/4" would fit at the bottom of the taper as it enters the slot but would jam before reaching the top of the taper. The top of the taper at the point where the center of the pin (widest spot) sits is just under 1/4". So I believe 3/16" would be the size to use. This was measured on a tuna rod. (rods we used for halibut.)

Thanks for the info. I'll pass that on up the chain of command. Material cost isn't the issue here it's the shipping I'm being told.

On my Shimano Tylora (TLA-80MC-2) 8' trolling rod the slot will allow a 17/64" drill bit to bottom out. In fact the slot is slightly bigger than 17/64".
