Rock slide in Fraser River, B.C., may hinder salmon passage

4- We have a weak useless PM running the country who only listens to the FN's and the ENGO's and ignores the science....
Agree w most of your other points, Jackel - but not this one. Justin may maybe look weak to some - but behind the scenes - he is just another 4 year tyrant with a huge ego. How he handled the SNC Lavalin affair demonstrated that he listen's to big business & crooks out of Quebec - not FN. Ask Jody Raybould-Wilson about his commitment to FN - or maybe any FN.

As far as being corrupt and ignoring the science - which Harper was also big on lets not forget - I think there is another play here. I think it's the NOAA ORCA response that Canada needs to match in order to keep a seafood market to 'merika. see: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/fore...nal-marine-mammal-bycatch-criteria-us-imports

See how it matches NOAA's zones and responses:
srkw-critical-habitat-proposed-enhanced-man-areas-key-foraging-areas-eng.jpg

As far as the SNC Lavalin affair - they are prime contractors on the Trans Mountain pipeline - if they got dinged w corruption charges they'd be otta the picture on this multibillion $ project (and others) and a crooked politician has to protect his and his party's funders: https://www.alaskahighwaynews.ca/bu...peline-extension-under-the-pacific-1.23776863

Anyways - back onto rock slides...

Well when they tell you, that you are on stolen land that they have had no right to sell at some point if you still want to be in Canada you do have to say no.

anyways back to the topic, the only reason i can see for not blasting on the right side as if they are worried about slope stability, but judging by how its cutting into that right side we might find out sooner or later.

Which has to do w the history of this Country & colonization and not boy-blunder's antics. But, as you say - anyways back to the topic...

Aug 4, 2019 Big Bar Landslide update.

• The scaling crew continue to manipulate rocks at water level. These personnel use hydraulic jacks and inflatable air bags to strategically move the large boulders in predetermined areas. Crews are making encouraging progress in building a natural fish passage on the river’s edge.
• Genetic testing has been completed from the Early Stuart Sockeye Pilot Enhancement Project. All salmon involved were successfully captured and transported to the Cultus Lake lab.
• Bio-sampling for stress testing continues on the salmon, alongside the radio tagging operations. Stress testing, which involves measuring their fat content, lactic acid levels, hormone levels and a blood analysis, allows biologists to monitor and assess the salmon’s health before transport.
• Two helicopters continue to transport salmon in holding tanks upstream, past the obstruction. This relocation operation continues to be successful, and remains ongoing. As of today approximately 4,300 Sockeye and Chinook salmon have been transported upstream from the slide.
• Additional salmon holding tanks arrived to Lillooet yesterday. They will be transported to the capture site to improve helicopter transport capacity.
• The implementation of the Fish Wheel continues, with additional on-water resources arriving tomorrow. Once integrated, the wheel will increase the efficiency of the capturing process, and will increase the number of fish transported upstream of the obstruction.

As the water drops the more debris on the blast side will create more of a funnel. They need to be blasting the other side as well.

This among many other reasons is why I don’t have much faith in this team of experts.

Why don't you contact them and ask why they are not blasting the other side?

It's all fine and dandy, for all of us, to be a monday morning quarterbacks but talking a good game and performing on the field are two different things.

How do you know I have not?
Will be interesting to see the results of how big this slide was, once the water drops a few meters over the next few weeks.

It is my understanding that the river left side is holding back a significant amount of material and there are concerns that removing it will cause more material to enter the channel and further block fish passage.

Also, the natural fishway side will actually depend on the constriction maintaining water levels. If the level drops there may be no feasible way around.

In the vid they called it a complete blockage, Where did all the early chinook end up? Did they make it past or not?

had a second listen to this and the minister made the comment " a number of chinook runs are circling and waiting to get up"

ugggg

christ they have found morbid salmon on the banks, not good not good at all, listen at the 33 min mark

• As of today approximately 5,300 Sockeye and Chinook salmon have been transported upstream from the slide. The capture and transport operations remain successful, and will continue to ramp up.
• Heavy precipitation in the northern portion of the Fraser watershed has resulted in rising water levels on site. This increase could impede our efforts.
• Due to rising water levels, the hydroacoustic fish monitoring stations have been removed temporarily. These stations were established to quantify the number of salmon upstream and downstream from the slide site.

Not sure what this is a picture of. Can anyone identify what they are doing?

Thanks for posting the updates. Boy, it must be HOT working up there!
As for what they are doing, it looks to me like they are using a dip net to remove fish from a temporary holding net cage.
You can see them sorting seined fish into the net cage in the August 1 video.
Also, check out the August 2 video to see the fish wheel being moved upstream. Wow!

Simply more Lies and Mistruths to the general public for the appearance they are Saviors to the plight of the Salmon.

Sickening really.
Its time to cut the leg and save the body. These guys are just spinning ********. How many morbid salmon? Runs of chinook circling never one accounting of a acoustic counts above or below the slide. Keep us in the dark so the political spin can go any which way. Blow a friggin path through there and give the fish that remain a chance. 5000 fish in buckets since they heard of the slide is in my view very disappointing and pretty much futile.

Seems more like a FN appeasement press conference.
- Dead salmon are very common on the Fraser along the gravel bars this time of year.
-“FN have decided not to fish up and down the coast for conservation”

- Why is the sonar Above the slide being taken down when there is only a moderate bump of water?
- There is calm areas above the slide why is the sonar not being properly installed and tied down in those areas?

- Why is this all of a sudden called a complete blockage when water levels have been pretty stable the last few weeks or so?
- Why are the numbers of fish migrating passed the slide not being given out?
https://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/report...7&prm1=46&y1Max=&y1Min=&prm2=47&y2Max=&y2Min=

-“ runs of salmon circling around below the slide “
If there was complete runs of of salmon or 5k of springs and sockeye it would be spotted out from the drones instantly.
-Why isn’t the FN leadership holding DFO accountable for not finding out about this slide until 7months after the fact?
-If this a natural disaster why are more(army) helicopters not being flown into the area to help drop more boulders to create a break in the flow?
- With the timeline that these salmon are facing why isn't all resources being used, regardless of the cost!

This press conference has all the signs of a salmon closure coming. 41 minutes of ******** from Wilkinson.
Once again too little to late from DFO

When and if these efforts fail, who is to blame DFO or the FN leadership panel?

This combined with the poor sockeye returns and I bet your right.

I did get the feeling like they are laying the ground work for a total closure.

They are pulling a damaged acoustic receiver out of the river.
