Renfrew?

Going out to Renfrew on the 16th, don't plan any chuck fishing but is there anything in the river that can be fished for? What about crabbing off docks etc?

Was out on the weekend, didnt fish but did see only one boat on the water, checking crab pots. Is it because there are no fish or is the water just too questionable? I did get to see how quickly a storm can come up, wow! For a inlander like me it was quite a suprise!

Well, I am not planning to fish past the points, maybe as far out as the can but I will be listeneing to the weather etc. When do people usually start fishing up there? I was hoping to get out in mid March.

IF you go out of the bay and go East, there are some EXCELLENT ling-cod spots to be tapped, you just have to work your way down to find them. Unless you are ready to try anchoring for Hali's in that swell, you will probably have limited success for them. The bank will be a dead-zone right now assuming you could get to it. THe crabbing, however, will be phemominal on the North side of the bay, and you can get winters at the harbour mouth, it's just not known for being hot. Steelheading on the other hand is pretty good. I get there in early April myself.

I believe you asked about fishing this time of the year in Renfrew on another thread and the answers all came back in the negative response so trying again won't change the experiences of us who have fished here for years old chum.

It's like anywhere around these parts check the weather would the first and formost. Fishing in Renny is possible at any time of year. Good winter chinooks, crabs, hali and bottom fish but first the weather it can change real quick.:D

Alley Cat, you are right, my mistake, must be losing my memory! Need reinforcement I guess, just like the kids I teach! When you guys talk about "the bank" etc, you are talking about quite a ways out aren't you? I am just thinking about the harbour itself. Lots of good info!

Here's a little tid-bit. The closest I ever came to disaster wasn't at the can or at the banks, it was coming out of the river into the bay in late October. I miscalculated the timing of the waves breaking on the beach and blasted right out into a massive wave. I nailed the throttle and crawled up the mountain and my entire 19 ft boat did a nice free fall into the hole below to find another vertical face right in front of me. It was good fortune we made it past that out far enough to get to where the wave peaks were far enough apart to turn around and surf back in. My stomach still gets in knots just thinking about it.

Tips up :)

yea it is kinda a local sport to take some beers down to the river mouth on a snotty day and watch the less expericened guys come in through there, some scary moments, but hey at least someone will be able to call for help if needed, and one of the surfers could pick someone out of there

not saying your inexperienced vicboater, thought i better clear that up before someone jumps on me

We all have lessons to learn, including myself. Experienced enough to get out alive:D, inexperienced enough to get in the jam to begin with [:I]

Cheers

those waves at the river mouth are only an issue during the winter and you'd be better off spending the day surfing anyways(its a killer break).

In the summer the swells just don't wrap into the bay at the right angle to cause anything to break.

Disagree , have seen some awful water in the area of the sand bank when you have the tail end of a low tide combined with a wind and swells coming straight in from magnetic 230 degs.
Watched a 22 ft get slapped on its side with those conditions in July of 2004.
If you want to ask Bob Galluagher of his experience on that same bar in the summer he will verify its danger.
Anyone on this forum old enough to remember the barge that sank off of the mouth of the river many years ago ?
It is one of the major factors of the sand bank build up in that area due to restricting and causing a back eddy flow on the major tides and those who fish out of there regularly will know that the sand bar configures in to a double bank during the summer on the big tides , giving you a roller coaster effect even on 2 to 3 ft tides given the right set of the tide and the incoming afternoon winds.

Have to agree with you alley seen some really big waves there, also remember about 6 or so years ago in november I was up hunting in the area and stopped to look at the corner where the indian campsite is and the tip of the point was completly gone couldnt believe what I saw as I remeber it was like climbing a mountain the sand bank was so steep now is in the channel and shallow when it used to be very deep there. There has been a few boats fall prey to the surf there!!!!!!!!!!

Merritboy the best thing to do before you go and adventure out there is maybe hire a local guide and ask him all about the goods and the bads out there and all the different points and reefs(thrasher rock for one) and hire him with the understanding that you have bought a place and your own boat but want a lesson I think this would be good for you and your safety as renfrew is NOT a place to start out as a newbie we really dont want anybody here on the forum or anybody else get hurt on the water.

Last chance(kelly) is a great guide and he knows the waters well, maybe try him.

Good luck Wolf

It should also be pointed out that there are some absolutely beautiful flat days out there too; its not all doom and gloom.[8D] Just be sure to check the marine forecast, swell and tides before you go. The tide does get low enough that you cant get out of the river from the marina too. I think you need a .3m tide min or so depending on your boat. And on your first time out the river follow out someone else as there is a set path to follow; I've seen lots of people bottom out their boats.
