Prop questions 175 Double Eagle

Tips Up

1991 175 Double Eagle. 2018 Yamaha F115.
After moving my fuel tank from stern to center deck, new seat boxes and adding forward fish hold, my weight distribution has changed. With the current 17 pitch prop I was getting great hole shot but my bow was holding low and I wasn’t getting the range of trim I’d like.
Yesterday I went out in the calm waters of Saanich inlet to test a couple props. Just me on board.

Started with the 17 pitch aluminum Yamaha prop. Great hole shot. WOT 5900 rpm 35 mph. 4200 rpm 24.5 mph. 3800 rpm 20 mph. Bow stays low at higher speeds.

Changed to 19 pitch Yamaha aluminum prop. 5700 rpm at WOT. 37 mph.
Cruise 22 mph at 3800 rpm and 25 mph at 4000 rpm. Sounded better, handled better and bow was higher with more trim range.
But hole shot was a bit slower and sounded to be working harder out of the hole. Concern with the lack of hole shot would be pulling Hali anchor and trips where I am loaded with 3 people , cooler and gear.

So now do I buy stainless 19 pitch to improve hole shot and I’m gold?

Stay with the 17 with more people and gear your better off and SS will be even better as the prop doesnt flex as much..

All other aspects of performance and handling seem to be better with the 19. The hole shot is not terrible. Just not as good as the 17. Would stainless not improve this?

I’d rather run through 3or4 aluminum props than one stainless. For the price, $300 vs $1000. I’m happy enough with my solas rubex 13.2x17. My 13x19yam performed very different than a 13x19 solas rubex. 6000rpm vs 5000rpm. Buying a stainless and not knowing how it’ll perform on your application is risky. Requires FU money.

Hmmm.
Will a stainless 17 get me the performance of the 19?
Or will a 19 stainless get me the hole shot if the 17?
I want the handling and the trim range I get from 19.

hole shot will be the same, gain 2 percent once on plane with a factory cupped stainless over the same pitch in aluminum

I'd say no one both fronts.

Aluminum 4 blade is likely to add bow lift which doesn't sound like what you want. Solas are a good budget prop. I run some of there stainless hr4's on a boat but it needed stern lift (which these provided).

I run the basic 3x19 yam prop on my 176 which works great with the 115 (2018 I believe). It hits 6000 with standard load and gets out of the whole fine. The DE gets 6mpg at 26mph with normal load. Wot is over 40mph. Thats with 2 people and normal gear. Tank against the transom. Interesting yours is seeing a 10% top end reduction.

Are you on the mainland?

I have a 14.25” x 17p four blade stainless Turning Point prop (31501731 I think)
no longer using if you’d like to try it. It’s in as new condition.

The four blade provided stern lift and better low speed maneuverability when compared to the original 14.5” x 17p aluminum mercury propellor.

Appreciate the offer but I am in Victoria. Also Yamaha motor. Thank you!

Are these props the same series?

Maybe what your looking for might be a 19 pitch that has progressive rake. You definetly have your WOT on either prop. I gather you like the bow lift characteristic of that 19. There could be a prop out there with some characteristics you can benefit from. You changed the center of gravity by moving your tank. Which is great. Now it's all about getting a prop that works with your center of gravity. Need to have a prop that progressively digs down. Engine height also dictates this.

Potential winner at a great price. If it doesn’t work out it wouldn’t be hard to get your money back.

Nope...no go! The OP has a Yamaha F115, which has a max allowable prop diameter of 14". This prop linked above has a diameter of 15.5"
