We get lots of good prawning in Esperanza...Carlyle works great

Share Kare is my source for Carlyle. There has been a couple times over the last couple years it became hard to get, but they always managed to bring some in. For short soaks I like to use half a can in with my prawn pellets. I used to get the pellets at Buckerfields until the price went up. Bubbagump at Pacific Net & Twine in Parksville/Coombs has the best price at this time. Buy it in the 55 lb bag for economy.

I saw some comments about floats that discourage floats that will carry your traps. I disagree with that. While I don't want them to float off, if the current or wind drags them into deeper water, I want the floats to carry them and be floating high enough that I can find them. Secret is to have enough weight and scope to hold them 90% of the time and in the odd occassion the floats will save the day. I have gotten tangled and picked up 3 sets of prawn and 2 crab traps that were in water too deep for the scope and the floats wouldn't carry them. I also lost a couple early in my learning curve and luckly had one returned by an honest fisherman that snagged it with a salmon line and was patient enough to bring it in. He kept the other 3 sets of hooks and flashers also tangled as his reward.

Anyway, moral of my story, have enough floats.

Do any of you use commercial traps?

I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to buy a few used commercial traps.

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

That is all my partner and I fly. We collected up quite a bunch of stainless commercial traps, the large stackers, over the past couple of years. And yes, they DO fish and fish well! Most hauls up by Esperanza result in us tossing back a few handfuls simply to stay within the limit! And, the larger mesh allows the smaller bugs to generally escape (strained out through the mesh) providing for larger average sized individuals in your catch.

Cheers,
Nog

Okay, I figured the commercial ones were good, and I have a line on some used ones too. Sweet. [8D]

I run a set of 4 - 6 commercial square traps, 3 24" and 3 18". They have 4 doors and a bait tube in the center so you can add weight, fish bits or catfood. No putzing around with tieing stuff in. I also have a few recreational traps, square 18" with 4 doors and while they often catch more by the numbers, the commercial traps time and again outfish the rec ones. As I understand it, the ruling for commercial is 3/4" mesh on 3 sides and 3/4 x 1/2 on 3 sides. Important to get ones that have the 3/4 x 1/2 mesh on the bottom to help keep them in, but still allow smaller guys to escape out the sides. My 24" out do the 18s virtually every time. I have had some of the round cloth mesh traps and found my squares out do them every time. Don't know why, but I sure like the commercial door design. My two bits.

Well I don't know about this cat food!!!! Bought some carlyale, mixed it with my prawn bait, partner used reg. prawn bait, out fished me, some of my traps absolutley nothing. Fished in our favorite spots ,always good there, thank god the cat food is .50cts a tin, back to prawn bait ,to hell with the *****.[xx(]

Had one of my traps torn in 2 places 4-5 inch holes. Talked to a guy at the wharf,ex commercial prawner, said octupus will tear a trap apart to get in, no prawns either. This was at pat bay.

only fill the containers up 1/2 way, so water can flow through easy and get all the scent out (do this when doing only a few hour sets)
My best pull ever was carlyle, trout pellets, and halibut scent (the scent you put on your lures for halibut)

Hi All, I have a question for all you prawns fishers. I was going to got out halibut fishing and was wondering if anyone ever runs a prawn trap off their anchor while they are fishing. I could run a 20 ft line off the trap to the anchor then just lower down the anchor and drift back a little way. After fishing for a few hours it should be easy to pull the anchor and the trap at the same time. Is this something you think will work or will I just end up with a big mess.... Steve.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

Has nobody ever tried to do this before? Maybe I'm on to something. Let me know what you think.

I've thought of running a trap off an anchor line before, but I assumed it would be more hassle than it's worth.

Been there done it if you do it you have to go very very slow as it bends the hell out of the trap with the drag lifting the anchor did it a couple of time and was heavy as hell as now you have the trap and the weight of the anchor took 2 guys grunting it in and im not a small guy LOL your better off putting it near where you are hali fishing and keeping an eye on it.

Good luck Wolf

Thats great Wolf. I was wondering if it would add much extra drag. I still might try it once. No harm in trying.... right. I'll let you know how I make out and whether or not I'll ever try it again. Thanks again for thr reply. Steve.

Has prawning slowed down for anyone else in the Saanich Inlet/Pat Bay?

2 weeks ago, I had close to my limit in about a 2 hour soak. The last two times I've been out, (same spot) I've only managed to take home about 80 shared between 6 traps.....?

I'm going to give the Carlyle cat food a try this weekend...do you guys mix it with the regular prawn bait in the bait jars...?

Also, any info on the crabbing situation? I normally do OK in front of Arbutus Ridge area any recent info would be appreciated.
