prawns

using floats that are large enough to actually lift your traps off the bottom is a totally bad idea. what will eventually happen is you are going to have your entire rig drift off site and at some point get hung up someplace else, good bye outfit. i had this happen with a crab trap that i had dropped in water deeper than i thought (a really low minus tide). came back the next morning and the trap was missing in action. i had drifted well over 3 miles and hung the bottom in a new location. you should have plenty of weight inside your traps to keep them in place, mine have 20# each. add enough line to not only reach the bottom but to have plenty of scope. in a heavy current, your floats may go under so make sure you use your GPS when you drop the traps.

I set my traps before a tide change INCOMING, have never done very good on an out going tide, On and incoming with 3 traps I have always got my limit. My partner mixs pellets with cat food I don't, don't see much difference. Hit the right spot and your done for the day. I let mine soak 2hrs at a time get 2 sets in a day and finished

tons of traps out in the inlet right now, like ridiculous amount. Pretty damn slow around the ramp and senanus island. Moved up a bit towards pat bay and had 2 limits in a 4 hour set.

Fished cape keppel, marked lots of bait but no takers.

Fog Ducker:

If you weren't somewhere off Sidney/Oak Bay area last Friday then someone else is indeed using the same handle as you.

I talked with him briefly. Not sure - sketchy communication - but it seemed he was a sailboat...

I picked up carlyle yesterday at share kare here in Port Alberni. They seemed to be running low, but the price was 12.99 for a 24 pack
Its worth every penny

Put the traps out today near patricia bay got 546 in a 4 hr soak all big ones threw back about 50 small guys. Going back out in the morning to do another pull and take out the traps.

546..... WOW..... thats alot. how many traps did you have out and how deep were you. I have never gone prawning but with a report like that I just might have to start. Good job Spooled Again..... steve.

And remember....Keep your tip up!!!

There really is no "art" to prawning. Get some traps on the rocks in 200-350 feet of water, get some standard issue prawn bait, and fly at it. Just like fishing, if one spot doesn't work, just move. Saanich Inlet is a great place to learn, there are prawns everywhere, but some places/tides are better then others. Just don't start with crappy folding traps, use the round ones.

yup tons of big monster prawns from pat bay north again today. Its been hit too hard around senanus and the ramp. With amount of pots out there lately I'm thinking pulse openings would be a good idea.

wow Pappa Swiss sounds like you had a much better day than I did at work today.

please anyone out there please give me some co-ordinates that I could plug into my GPS that would get me into some prawns. I live in the Vancouver area

Fog Ducker thanks for the cat food tip I have been trying this prawn oil I was given with no success. Also FD how was the road into the nook I have only driven it once and found it challenging.

cheers

I had 12 traps down. Left them in over night and pulled them all this am and took them home. Limited out for the 4 of us today. Had to throw lots back. Got the most at the 290-300 ft depth. The ones in 240ft didnt get as many. More in the traps closer to cole bay.
