using floats that are large enough to actually lift your traps off the bottom is a totally bad idea. what will eventually happen is you are going to have your entire rig drift off site and at some point get hung up someplace else, good bye outfit. i had this happen with a crab trap that i had dropped in water deeper than i thought (a really low minus tide). came back the next morning and the trap was missing in action. i had drifted well over 3 miles and hung the bottom in a new location. you should have plenty of weight inside your traps to keep them in place, mine have 20# each. add enough line to not only reach the bottom but to have plenty of scope. in a heavy current, your floats may go under so make sure you use your GPS when you drop the traps.
