Prawn Puller

boc,

That looks great! Instead of building overweight traps next week I'll start building me one of those.

Thanks for the photo!

Now if only you posted that a year ago <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>I tried to make one last year the desighn is not as good as that though! Same materials also

Try feeding your prawn line through a pulley fastened to a scotchman and tie it to your transom (bowline of course) and pull some slack through the pulley.
Put your boat in gear, drop the scotchman as you throttle up, and head in a straight line untill the float is behind your boat just less than your line length. Eg. 200 yds for 250 yd.s of lin. Stop the boat and reverse idle as you pull in the slack line. This will save your arms untill you build or buy a prawn puller. I'm moving to Comox in April. Save me some prawns!!

Hi Blue Orca
I am trying to figure out how you joined the winch to the wheel through the pillow block? I thought that when you removed the drum from the winch you would have needed a spline of some sort to go from the gearbox to the wheel. Any more information on how you did it would be very much appreciated.

Blue Orca,

The puller looks great how did it hold up in the salt water? If it work well maybe you should manufacture them or pantent them. Simlar ones down here in the states sell for $500-600. Thanks for the pictures.

Kisinana. I left the drum on the winch. The pillow block is basically just a nylon block with a whole bored the same size as the diameter of the drum, and then sawn in half. It is then bolted back together so as to clamp (not tightly) around the drum. Filled with high preasure grease. The bolts go through the block to the mounting plate. On the outside of the drum is bolted the large diameter wheel.
Battaglino...It holds up great in the salt chuck.
I leave it mounted on the bow all winter.
As for making them for a living...not a chance... with cost of $50.00 Canadian for the winch, I think that I would be just setting myself up to replacing lots and lots of winch's. The up side though is that the motors can be tossed every other year if need be.
My original plans used a wheel chair motor (high torque and slow speed) but I couldn't get one cheap enough.

Blue Orca,

The key is only having a 1 year warenty on the motor and charge 100 to replace it. Did you have to machine any parts to put it together? I may need to build one. Joe

The main wheel (14 inch by 1 3/4 inch with 1 inch grove) and the block were both machined by a plastics mfg in Campbell River. Cost was for finished parts.
The pillow black only needs to be drilled and cut in half and the did that too.
I found that a 14 inch was a better speed than one that was made at 12 inch.
You could go to the expense and powder coat the steel, but I just primed and painted.
The base fits any Scotty mount.

Do you feel that motor is well sealed for salt water?

CA ...anytime, would like to meet you...
Knucklebuster.....The winch is water proof but at $50.00 I can afford to replace it every year if I have to. So far it looks like it will out last me though. I've had it get pretty much out in the elements with no problems after a year and a half use.

Hi Blueorca,

Where did you get the nylon wheel and pillow block fabricated and what material is it made from? I contacted a plastics place here in Vancouver they they said a minimum of $300 bones for those parts in UHMW Polyethylene. I have everything all set to go except for those 2 parts. Any help would be appreciated, thx.

2000 lb winch from Costco @ $50.00
14 inch nylon wheel (machined) @ $70.00
3 inch nylon pillow block @ $25.00
3 inch stainless pulley @ $10.00
Angle iron and square tubbing...??

Pulls traps around 60 - 80 feet per minute with little effort.

Hi Blueorca,

Where did you get the nylon wheel and pillow block fabricated? I like your design and I have all of the parts except for those 2. i contacted a platics fabricator here in Vnacouver and they quoted me atleast 300 bones to make those out of UHMW Polyethylene - ouch! What material did you use? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Do you hear an echo?
I had mine made in Campbell River by Plastics Plus.
They should be in the book.

nice puller!

ive seen other homemade pullers. one guy had a starter from a GM with 2 frying pans stuck together and some tubing with a pullie on the end. the guy said it worked great for pulling his prawn traps and crab trap

Blue Orca, I was at Costco today in Nanaimo and they dont sell that model anymore, as it was so small they did not sell many so Costco discontinued carrying these anymore. I will keep looking for a motor and will contact you to have a look at the puller. Thanks for info.
