Prawn Connery

Prawn Connery is a good title for this thread - pulling traps before and after work won't go into finite details like licenses (who needs em?) and daily limits (what are they?). Yup there could be some Connery going on here!

But what do they say - if you aren't cheating you aren't trying. It's still a nice haul and it would only bother me if they go to waste, for sale or a gross amount are given away. Enjoy the prawn dinners you took good care freezing them too.

regardless, was a real good trip i would say!, makes me want to head down to chandler n start building a prawnline of my own!
:o

How do you hit prawns hard other then soaking the pots in your favourit hole and picking them up 1 or 2 days later? I'm new to prawning so i'm wondering how you fish prawns hard! I thought pulling traps to quick is bad? My prawning is droppin them on the way out and go fishing for a day or two an pick em up on way home.

Awesome Prawning *****! freezer looks beauty! even better name......Prawn connerey. u should sell that name to a commercial prawn boat or something!

cheers,

wooly
I fish Saanich Inlet close to home here. When the prawning is decent,I can pull the traps every 2-3 hrs. Usually within
a couple of pulls,I have my 200 prawn limit, and drop em down till the next morning, rinse, repeat. In 7 days I have at
least 1000-1200 in the freezer and I'm done. Not rocket science!

I talked to a commercial guy who suggested freezing prawns covered in water ( I use plastic containers) and to use them within about three months. Any other thoughts on keeping them fresh? I usually don't store large amounts ( no excuse to hit the water :-) but what I do I like to keep fresh.

i use empty milk jugs.. count em .. mark on the side and cover in water,, they stay good for a long time.

I just use the heavy Zip lock freezer bags, cover with water and double bag as I've had a few "blow out" on me in the
past. They're never as good as the fresh ones, but I don't think any kind of seafood freezes very well and something
seems to be lost in the taste. Still tasty though, even after 6 months.

use saltwater if you can to fill your container, I use small tubs that hold about 1/2 lb of tails, head off shell on, works better than anything else I've tried. A friend used to commercial fish prawns and they did this on board. they were able to flash freeze them in the tubs with salt water. I used to buy them off him years ago and they were amazing. you should also slow thaw them in the fridge if time allows. many times i just put them under the tap with cold water and they were ready to cook in a few minutes.
cheers nicnat

That is an intersting one.. Years ago we froze our hali fillets in salt water. Even brought it (yes... the water) down in a cooler from pt McNeill area. It changed the texture and I have never done it again. We freeze prawns in fresh water. They always turn out great.

i keep all mine in a bucket with about 30- 1/8 holes drilled in the bottom.. fill the bottom bucket with water and immerse... repeat every 5-10 mins... canso,, you need a bigger bucket!! nice haul!!

This is a pretty good idea, thanks

Do not kid yourselves, DFO is all over theses forums folks.... careful what you say even more so what you do....

I have never fished a prawn in my life but i am pretty sure 200 per/day is plenty....going to the spot prawn festival in Cowbay this weekend to see if i can learn some more tips n tricks..thanks again for everyone's advice..looks like i will be fishing one string with two Swedish traps on the one string, plan on spacing them apart 30 feet and have a few pounds weight in each trap, aswell as a 5lb weight 20 feet ahead of the two traps to minimize movement..i have the prawn pellets n Just tuna for cats.., now i just have to go down to chandler to see if i can work a deal on the "Ace" puller...

I can prawn with 6 people on my boat with room to spare! Why couldn't Prawn Connery do the same? Nice catch. (Wish I could do the same, but I suck at prawning lol) Why everyone assumes you did it illegally is beyond me. Guilty until proven innocent I guess!! MYOFB

I don't think he did it illegally, because you would have to be pretty dumb to post on here if you did. I am just saying that if I where DFO, I would be monitoring forums like these
I agree, most guys on here are into conservation of the resource, so to over fish or flaunt over fishing anything would be foolish.
