Quick question on posession limit. If your fish is processed meaning filleted and Vac packed does it still count towards your posession limit?

Also there are regs on how you need to package and transport your catch. You can't just hack it up into a million tiny pieces!

It can be cut any way you want it as long as it's done by a licensed processing facility. We had all our fish processed into one pound packs at Moutcha Bay Resort when we were there last month.

OK thats the way I thought it was but just wanted to make sure. So I could ship it home to the wife and keep fishing for another few days.

Well yes and no, you couldn't start fishing again until it actually arrived at your residence and your wife picked it up...so that'd be a few days down the road.

Like Lorneparker1 said it's part of your possession limit "till it is in your freezer"at your ordinary place of residence. I could be wrong but I believe that would indicate that while in transit it is still part of your posession limit and one should check with DFO before continuing to fish just to be on the safe side.

Nope, it can be packaged yourself as long as its done according to the regs.

Absolutely, BGM, but it can't be processed to the exact packaging you like, unless of course, that's fairly large pieces. Example : If you catch a 25 lb. halibut and process it yourself, you have to leave it in four fillets to transport. Take the same fish to a licensed processing facility and it can be processed and packed to meal-size servings. Licensed processing definitely adds to the cost, but IMHO, it was worth it. Everyone else's needs and wants may differ. I definitely will be doing the same thing again next summer.

P.S.: I'm referring to people like myself who have a long way (1000+ km) to travel to our residence.

yes this,, piece #1 of 1, piece #2 of 1 etc etc...

i make a point of bringing all my fish home first then drop it at the processor.... saint jeans depot...there is no way i am going to stop fishing while my fish is being processed. so take it home first.....good loophole?
i fully agree with "til its in your freezer" i have seen a lot of fish run out to the depot in port alberni and do not agree with the fishers doing this.... Even if people leave with my fish it goes to my house first.

Oh, now I see what you mean. Thanks for clarifying!:-)

So lets say that someone sends a possession limit to ST Jeans for smoking, canning etc. It takes 4 weeks for this fish to come back to you for pick up and ultimately your freezer or pantry shelves. No fishing for 4 weeks? Think about it...don't think that flys.

Good point, the fish is no longer in your possession once you drop it off at St. Jeans is it? Does anybody check? Care?

Here is a question, are you allowed to travel with 8 springs in your possession? Say you fished a 4 day trip and retained only 2 salmon per day (springs) would you be legal or is the traveling limit 4 springs?

No, you would only be allowed four springs in your possession while travelling.

As far as my understanding to be 100% legal you yourself have to put that fish in your freezer, you cannot mail it ship or send it home with people and continue to fish. That's like saying a person that's far from home like an American or Albertan or even farther can fish there limits in 4 days but are staying a month ship there fish home every 4 days and continue to fish. That's not the way it works well its not the way its suppose to be.Im sure this happens all the time but as long as you don't have more then your limits on you your fine.I know one guy had 18 springs on his license .He got checked and DFO did nothing cause all he had was 4 in the freezer .Where did the other 14 go ?How much fish does one person need.

Wrong, it's in your possession until you get it home. Below is an excerpt straight from the regs:

Fish caught by an angler that is being prepared, cooked, or is partially consumed away from the angler’s ordinary residence ( i.e. while staying at a camp ground, overnighting on a boat, residing at a hotel, etc.) is considered as part of the fisher’s possession limit. If you send your fish to a licensed fish processor it is still considered to count towards your possession limit. The amount of fish a person is preparing to consume cannot exceed the possession limit. The head and tail of all finfish and the carapace (shell) of any crab caught must be retained until the fish has been consumed.

DFO actually looked in his freezer?
