The wife and I are going to be in Port Alberni on Wed and Thur to try for some sockeye. Is the fishing still good, but small fish as last reported? I am hearing the fish have moved up some and are not to far down. Thanks, in advance for any info.

We fished the area today.I like to fish nahmint for a couple of reasons ,much to my demise.Nothing.So we joined the pack ,and I mean "pack" just off China creek. We saw a few boats catching but for the most part it is tuff fishing. We only managed two in the box.I heard that a MP 182 (blue pink) hoochie was working for someone but we had that on and nothing.PS Mp 182 slays springs in the canal by the way.Good luck.

Thanks for the info. We have a friend who fished yesterday as well. He said the pack of boats he was in must have been around 140+. He only saw five fish caught. Sounds like the fish must have made a run up the river. We will be passing thru on our way to Ucluelet. With the fishing dropping off for socks we may just go all the way without stopping. Thanks again!! :D

Fish are all from China to Lone Tree-Cous C. right now. The #'s aren't bad but the bite is very short around 6:00 for about 45 minutes then scratchy thereafter. Of the "2 million" boats out this weekend, from what I saw and heard, only about a 2-3 fish average per boat. I suspect things should improve in the next few weeks but this fishery is definitly unpredictable from day to day.

Fishing is picking up somewhat every day.
Yesterday, guests limited by 8:30. Rain, heavy at times, is moving them a bit more. Cous is getting alot of preasure first light but for those with the right setup, there's lots of fish.
Everyone is giving each other lots of room for the most part.
The girls from Comox (you know who you are) are slaying them again.

Ya the test seiner Argent 1 took 2400 from Lone tree area in one set the other day

That may be why there weren't many in inlet. Do they still limit the days for the comercial fisherman? And do they post this? We are goint to try out luck on in a couple of weeks on the way back from Winter Harbour I hope they will still be running.

It's true, test seiner took 2400 socs July 11 from the narrows, how stupid is that when hundreds of people are spending hundreds of dollers trying to catch a few fish on their long awaited vacation. Why are they test seining anyway, the river count tells it all doesn't it? What happins to the fish they net, anybody Know?

Test seine will dictate the next commercial openings that will take place. Not much point in having an opening when the fish aren't in huge numbers.
The test boat is allowed to retain his catch, to which they already entered their name in the testing system. Each days catch is recorded and listed on the internet.

And just to play devils advocate here, how much do you think it costs to run a commercial boat per day?
Although I appreciate that the sport fishery generates far more revenue to the area than do the FN fishery and the commercial fleet, they are still entitled to the fish first. I'm not saying that I agree with that, but that's just the way it is currently.

Here's a link to the daily recordings. You will see a pattern in the way the fish are coming up the inlet and how they are holding.
For those not familiar with the area there is also a map that shows all the test set locations.

Hope this helps.
