Port Renfrew

What's the latest report?
Bannanas? Last Chance?
Might head up next weekend if it's worth while.

Thanks,
Tips

Bannanas... can you get Ian to call Graham in Victoria. I lost the numbers in my cell phone. Thanks.

I just got back from Renfrew. Anchored up in the bay Thursday night. First on the grounds Friday morning. LOW vis due to fog. Was on Radar for a day and a half. Fished the North bank and worked for our Hali's. Lots of Doggies around . Lots of X-large lings as well.

Most people were concentrating their efforts at Logan. We fished East point and loaded up on the cookie cutter teens and twenties.

Between Thursday night and Saturday morning we hooked into a couple dozen springs. Due to the greenhorn we were subject to rubber hooks. If you know what I mean. We did manage to boat half those however with the largest being a 37 we pulled from the kelp beds in 19' of water.

Everybody had a lot of fun and nobody went without playing at least a few springs.

( Oh and course Bill, because he got to the rod first )

heading out tomorrow for some beach fishing...Camper worth it at all, or are we better off right now at either East or Logan?

Fished renfrew this morning, 9hrs, East point first thing 1 10lber released, then off to logan 20lber white spring released. 2 hits, 2 fish, that was it. Very Very slow today, only saw two fish caught for about 200 boats. Yikes. Maybe they are headed to sooke.

ahhh.. nope.. their not headed to Sooke.. lol..
Was just out this after noon in Sooke.(Sunday), 12:00 - 6:00pm.
We started at Muir for about 2 hrs, nothing ! notta ! 4 rods down, not one hit !! pretty discouraged so we hit Otter for some flood tide action.. several boat there.. did not see one net out there for about 2 hrs.. got outta there and headed to Possession... 30 min. there we had a pin popper right in front of possession, big spring on for about 15 sec. before it shook the hook !! Ughghgh.! Saw no one else with fish on while we were there.. we did managed to scrape up a 25lb. halibut on the salmon gear by the Possession reef.. a little bonus.. at least some thing fresh for dinner. Over all.. very very discouraging for Spring fishing in Sooke considering it is Aug !! looking back on previous years fish stats I keep... this year is the worst on record !! where are the fish !!??

Yesterday (Saturday).. I was up fishing up at Renfrew ( friends boat up there), fished Logan first light.. a zoo of boats every where... we managed to land a double header two 28'lbers.. other than that.. no other hits all day long.. we tried East point mid day, nothing doing there.. with the amount of boats that were there.. only say a few other boats land fish.. back at the Marina the fish stat. girl was there.. under 12 springs had come in.. ! OUCH !! very disappointing and discouraging to see..

... also like to add, I had my family smelt fishing on the beach, 4 smelt nets down all day long only a hand full of smelt!! They had one net down on the opposite side of the bay by the other camp ground.. no smelt there either.. talked to other that were smelt fishing there for two days now.. even had the net out all night long.. NO smelt!! this is the third year in a row now they have gotten skunked smelt fishing in Renfrew ! that is un heard of.. there used to be billions of smelt there ! When I was kid there was so many smelt there was no need for smelt gill nets, the elder would use hand dip nets by running into the waves with the nets and fill there dip nets with smelt.. ! I like to know what has caused the collapse of this huge smelt run Port Renfrew once had.. !! this is major.. I wish DFO would be more responsible... no one really cares about the smelt I guess.. very sad to see... the bait is practically gone.. no wonder why there are so few salmon around.. very very sad...

Rock,, without a doubt you are the most depressing person on this board lolol,, there seems to be an average amount of fish being caught around the area just because you have hit a slow streak and the runs are off doesn't mean a total distruction of the species.. Do us a favour and brighten it up a bit or better yet learn how to fish a little better please...

I agree with you Rock , it is slow and lets hope the action picks up , I have 3 springs now to date , with little action between them , by your previous posts I am sure you know how to fish and walleyes I do know how to fish also!
Your comments on the smelt run are disturbing as like yourself as a kid in the 50's we as a family took home large amounts of smelt caught in just one set at night , Departure Bay also used to be a great place to pick up smelt !

Hey Rock, good reports!, keep ALL the reports coming, nothing wrong with an honest report and a true account of how good things use to be. Thanks for showing a true concern about our fishery.

Walleyes, you made a post on the "2008 Fishing" thread on July 30, page #1, and said you had 2 on your lic.from this May but according to you it's an average year, you must get your info from Fitters.I can totally appreicate what somebody like the Rock says especially when they have kept a log book for years. It's not loom and gloom it's the facts. If I only had 2 on my lic. by July 30 I would quit. Judging by your numbers you shouldn't be telling anybody to "fish a little better". Thats not a very nice thing to say to somebody who is just trying to leave honest, reliable info.

Hey Luna, I am sure you are not aware but Walleyes lives in Whitecourt Alberta and has only been to the coast once this year for a couple of days around Campbell River.........therefore I think he did not too bad given the time of year he was up....:)

Hey Walleyes, us current and ex-Albertans have to stick together eh...:D:D SS

Then again I thought it was great this past weekend. Lots of salmon for us.

Guess it's just the kavorka working for us. LOL

Hey , guess there were too many sets of smelt taken over the years.
They just didn't go missing for no reason.

Thanks for the info all. Normally I trailer to Renfrew but with the road being such a pain I thought I would look into other options. Once I am there we often go out to the bank so I am comfortable with the distance and the water conditions. I will probably just trailer up rather than take the chance with the ocean and the weather.

Thanks:D

Hmmmm....A report is report as long as it is factual, and sounds to me like TRock is only sharing what we all experience. Pretty slow around here maybe more to come[V]
cheers

Hey did you guys not get the lololo,, it was a bit of a rib.. But honestly there are a fare number of fish being caught they seem to be hanging on the outside yet but they will be moveing in soon I'm sure of it... Didn't meen to come accross so rude but jeeze listening to some reports on here you would think that ocean is dead and not just a little off time like it is.

was out on swiftsure early this morning, full limit of hali's and 5 ling cod.2 over 25lbs.slow for salmon, did see alot of whales around

wernt the initial reports saying everything was early??
my coworker fished renfrew for the long weekend too and said he didnt see a fish caught. He saw one guy play one for a bout 45 minutes he said right of the kelp but lost it and that was it. lots of halibut reported coming in but slow slow for salmon

Just got back yesterday. Fished Saturday got 3 springs, 35 and a couple in the mid teens. Early afternoon seemed to be the time. Fished with three other boats, 3 for me, 2 for another boat, one for another and nada in the last boat. Definitely not hot out there. Sunday fished early for salmon and my buddy landed a 14 before 8 oclock. Packed up and headed to the bank for a limit of hali's and back to Camper and Logan for two. Nothing after that. Saw a few fish caught Saturday, Sunday I only saw two fish caught all day. Overall a great trip though, the water was calm and the company was great. Got a few buddies who are staying the week but I figure a week or two and back I go. I'm sure they'll be there soon.... I hope.

Better than working!!
