Port Renfrew

Deewar,

You nailed it on the head as far as Sunday went. The bite started at around 5:15 am and ended at around 9:00. After that the fog bank brought in some chilly wind. That was it for us. We called it a day and headed back to Victoria. Great weekend. I would still agree that finding a slab chromer is still alot of work though. Hopefully it does pick up soon.

HL

i'm not sure where you guys were but the springs were biting full force this weekend, and today was even better .You just have to know where there biting at what times get that figured and you can get spring action almost all day.

My crew had 8 springs in the boat by 615 and a limit of halli and back on the dock by 10am.

Trevor is right. Renfrew is red hot if you are willing to get up early. Looked like the Charlottes the last few days for the numbers of fish caught.

Trev dude, for us mere mortals fishing can still be some work in an area that we don't hit every day.

You did always seem to have the knack though. I am not sure if I saw you This weekend. What boat were you in?

HL

PS I 'm a little rusty for sure. Gave up the guiding game almost 9 years ago now. I gotta ease back into things LOL. I'm still recovering from the trip out to Swifture. My heels are numb and my back is sure stiff.

I hear you highlights my back is pretty much wrecked after that slop on sunday and today.

If any of you guys are coming up i'm not on this most of the week but got in early so i thouhgt i'd come home for the night, but look up my cell and i will give any info to help you catch more fish.

Nice fish. What's the cut in its lower midsection? Seal bite?

I've been fishing Renfrew for 2 seasons now in a rather small 18ft boat. Sunday, July 13, we caught 18 crab, of which we kept 9. The rest of the day we fished from about 6:30-4 for hali just off East Point (a 1.5 knot drift & 150-200ft) & Springs between Camper & Otter Point, with no luck all day.
As we don't want to head out to the banks, should we be ancoring close in for Hali??
I heard the bite was between 5AM-8AM, & we tried every lure possible for Springs with no luck, what is working right now??

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Hey Trev, thanks for the offer of current info. I really appreciate when I can call a guy thats been on the water regularily and knows what the schools are doing. I chat with Murphy every time I set out to jet the Stamp. With guys like you and Dave in my corner our days on the water are much more successful.
I used to average 300+ days a year on the water. Now with wife and kids, business and just plain day to day life, keeping on top of things are difficult when the number of times out a year is only a couple dozen. Thats split up between species as well. Fresh and salt.So I am not particularily dialed into specific runs anymore.

So thanks, I'll make a point of giving you a call next time I am headed out that way.

Find the "scum" line in about 80-90' of water. Try a chovy @ 32-45' in a special or crippled head.

You can either drift or anchor off Camanah Pt for hali's! Look for gravel bottom with some structure.

I got a couple good yanks but nothign in the boat anchored at 160 feet off East Pt. You won't get much drifting for them unless you are on the banks, you need to anchor up, lay down a big ol' stink trail and they will come. Stay shallower to avoid the doggies.

Sombrio will probably be a better bet on the rougher days, but Carmanah I think is a lot more fishy.

Last Chance-We're up on Monday for 3 or 4 days. It's good to hear there are some crabs around. Is your boat called "Last Chance" too? We're in a 17.5 double eagle (I know, there's a gazillion of them) "No Rigours". Maybe see you up there.

Yep, my boat has my name all over it. I'll be leaving Sunday, good luck up here. Lots of crabs, you just have to go farther out. Fishing was great today as well.

Left Marina at 4:30 (ok, no exagerrating, woke up at 4:30, left marina at 4:40ish...too early for coffee...[|)]

Early bite at East Point as promised, although I think it has died down from what it was earlier this week. For about 20 minutes, bites all over the place of small-medium springs, then the switch turned off and nothing. Caught one small one we threw back, two pin poppers that got away.

Fished the beach until 12:30 or so. Got a 20 pounder aboard...finally the dry spell is over. :D Sure felt great to have a reel screamer, been a while. Saw a few fish caught off Camper, but overall was pretty slow. Not too many salmon at the dock, and a few people skunked.

DFO was around, looked to be doing spot checks. Checked 3 boats at Camper then sped off.

On the way back spent 45 minutes trying to find my crab trap...note to self: all the floats look just like yours, and by midday there's about a bazillion of them. Mark the spot on your GPS!

Met Kelly (Last Chance) at the dock with a slimy, bloody fish hold chock full of halibut and other fish from the deeps. Said it was very rough out at the bank, had to work hard for them today.

Home now, crabs in the pot, salmon prepped for the bbq, good times!

First time I did just a day trip to Pt. Renfrew (from Victoria). Left at 3:35 dropped pots in Thrasher and was fishing by 7-ish at Camper. Got a nice scrappy teenager at 7:30 just west of camper--another boat had one on at same time--did not see any others--(bites on and off real quick!), then not a sniff till 2pm, when my buddy got a white mid 20's--middle of Camper. Both on anchovy. Got home by a little before 8 pm with some crabs also. All round a good day!

Fished Friday. Left Victoria at 2:15 a.m. arrived Renfrew pre dawn only to find our battery was dead. By the time we got the battery out of the truck to jump the boat battery we missed the dawn bite at East Point.

We did release one small fish at East Point and moved on to Camper which was good to us. We hooked 5 springs and landed 4 including a 28, 24, 21 and 10 all in the space of about 90 minutes in the late morning. All on anchovy.

Fished the afternoon at East Point which was a waste and went back to Camper for an early evening bite which was dead as well other than one strike.
