Port Renfrew

Yah I know what you mean Charlie unfortunetly I don't really have an apropreate place to put a radar. What I usually do in heavy fog situations is get a lead and try my best to follow if thats not possible that would have to be one of those days you sit in I geuss or try and fish the shores...

Hey Walleyes, put a radar arch on that beauty, it is an awesume addition which will make you feel much more secure. I just put one on my boat and it is unreal to be able target everyone who is out there............ could also be useful to find out where all the hali fishermen are..........:D:D SS

TRowser the fish are all over but best bet is to start in 50ft of water fishing 25-45ft 41ft seems to be my magic.if that doesn't work move out to 100ft of water and fish from 40-70ft there seems to be more fish out there but i've been geting bigger fish in close but sometimes you have to wait.

See you in the morning Trev!! U want us to pick up anything?

We're stoked!

Remember, "When the Fish aren't Biting...the Fish aren't Biting!!"

Save some fish!;) Was out there most of the summer and had to work hard to get fish! Want to come back mid september for a few days, what is it usually like at that time for weather, water, fishing? Have only been out there that late once and it was SLOW!

We go up there all the time in my 19' Sangster. Its no problem. Just keep an eye on the weather and tides. The real trick can be getting out of the river.
We were in a 18 foot but didn't go out past the bay into the open ocean. I am from the prairie and felt comfortable in the boat we were in however I saw people ( had to be locals )in smaller boats and it seemed rather scary to me. By the way... we got into some big ones in the 2 days we were there( springs ) We were fishing our downriggers at 34 ft. and 42 ft. with chovies and nosebleed holders. The fishing was slow about an hour in between fish but all were a nice size biggest 33 1/2 and lost 2 big ones. 7 to the boat in 2 days of maybe 6 hrs each day.
Our second day out we got doubles and managed to land both. It was a great trip. My daughter caught the 33 1/2.. her first spring.:)

Well another fantastic trip to Renfrew this past weekend. Friday night, Saturday, Sunday morning. Water was fairly big. Especially past Carmanah. Not the best in the world in the usual spots, as the derby would indicate . The bank was as usual for the Hali's. A little more work though with the swells from the previous evenings wind warnings. Inshore we managed into eleven springs to the boat. A few more long line released. Ranging from 15-30ish lbs. And no was not in the Derby so the latter did not count. It was a big doe full of eggs so let her loose after a couple of pics. From the general consensus fishing is a little bit of work. If your lucky enough to tap into a pattern though fishing will be outstanding. It was for us. Good times. Hey we got into two double headers as well which always tends to be a bit of a gong show LOL

Be back in a few weeks.

Good luck guys!

PS hooked and release half a dozen Arrowtooth flounders while out on the bank. Anyone else run into these on a regular basis? They look like a Halibut but have a long underbite and very aggresive long teeth. The eyes are also very amphibious looking. Very round and bulbous. Kind of spooky looking.[:0]

Swiftsure Trip #2 in my boat on Sunday.

Water conditions: Was pretty bumpy out there at the start, 5-6ft swell with low interval, some steep waves. Grateful to see no fog, bit spooky with fewer boats, as I guess most were in the derby. It got glassier as day progressed, bumpy late afternoon when west wind picked up.

Fish: caught a bunch of smaller chicken halibut, although not the non-stop action it can be. Caught a nice ling cod, plus some snapper. Caught a couple of feeder springs trolling deep. Fished the beach for an hour or so on the way in, not a nibble.

Dinged my prop just inside the rivermouth, on the way out AND on the way in (once is excusable, but twice? :()

The derby celebration was underway when we got in, band playing, drinks flowing...glad we didn't stop in for a beer, because barely made it home awake as it was.

LONG day on the water, decent weather, made it home safe.

Good times!

Highlites-- when you hear fishermen referring to
"Vampires" , they are arrowtooth flounders.. flesh turns to mush almost instantly when they are killed-- one of the few fish out there that I will not eat. [V] When they move into an area, they can make fishing butts almost impossible..

20ft Alumaweld Intruder

Guided for a looong time and still learning a thing or two .LOL never heard the term vampires but makes sense. Those teeth were crazy. I thought it was a crazed Hali at first. Just did a "Google" on the fish and it seems clear what it was now.

Thanks for the reply Cuba

Whats the coho situation like? Any reports from in the Bay? How about outside along the beaches? I am looking to come up next week? Any feedback would be great?

From what I could hear on the radio, there seemed to be a serious contention of anglers mounting some pressure on the transient Coho passing through out on the bank.

AS for inshore there seemed to be a couple fluke catches of coho. Nothing to get all geared up over though. I heard of one in and around the 18lb mark. I would'nt say there is many of the SanJaun Coho showing up yet. In any numbers at least. Course I was targeting springs as most were. Give it another week or two. They'll show up.

we targeted coho on mon. and did ok they are showing up out front of renfrew bay to logan. a bit spoty but showing.
