Port Renfrew 2009 Season

Passing on a couple of recent reports from Port Renfrew
(and personally grinding my teeth just a little, not being able to get out there for the next while... [V])

Des from Vicious Fishing Charters emailed with a quick report today...he said fishing remains excellent, and today his guest caught a 26 pound hatchery coho. The Port Renfrew Marina said it's the largest hatchery coho they've ever weighed in, and they wonder if it's a record of some kind. In any case, NICE FISH! It was caught at Swiftsure Bank on a titan spoon.

The Marina reports a lot of wild coho, including some big ones. LOTS of Chinook salmon over 30 and 4 or 5 over 40 in the last 2 days. Trevor from No Bananas Fishing Charters emailed in a short Blackberry report too, [probably while out there fishing]: "fishing is still red hot...we limited on springs yesterday and today. Yesterdays largest was 42lbs".

damn that sounds great! I just need it to hold out for another 2 weeks :P
Any predictions on end of the month??
Wild coho are closed too arnt they, I assume they just mean alot are being caught?

Yup, lots of wild ones caught and thrown back.

The scuttlebutt and big hopes are that the coho season in Sept should be excellent this year, after a couple of bad ones in a row. I sure hope so, as that's really really fun fishing.

For springs...not sure how long they are likely to hang on, at least into first week of Sept I hope ... for my sake and yours! :D

Fishing is nothing short of FANTASTIC at Port Renfrew Marina right now! Chinook fishing is as good as it gets. Limit catches and tyee size salmon are still hitting the docks every day. We are seeing up to 4 springs a day over 40 pounds and this trend should continue well into September. Anchovies in the Purple Flash UV, Chrome Tiger Prawn and Purple Haze teaser heads seem to be the hot lures right now. The weather lately has been close to perfect, very calm seas for the most part and very little of that August fog we usually get. Check out the list of notable catches and it really says it all especially since we couldn’t possibly get them all recorded.

Coho are still out at Swiftsure and are growing larger daily.There should be lots of Coho over the 20 pound mark by next month. Desi Hatchard of viciousfishcharters caught what we believe to be a possible record of a 26 pound hatchery Coho this past week at the Bank along with a spectacular catch of other salmon and halibut. See pic.

Chicken Halibut are at the J bouy right now. Someone soon will start anchoring for the “barn doors†as they haven’t been targeted for quite a while. Crabbing has slowed down as usual for this time but if you are persistent you will get them.

Was out yesterday. It was tough fishing very slow for us and most people. Some boats did great. Beautiful weather. We fished from 5:30-1pm and got one about 22lbs. Lost 2 others and release a couple of Teenagers. But there was many hours with nothing. We fished logan all morning. Until we moved down to the rock pile as soon as we got there bang fish. I think it was just an off day as the fishing has been awesome the last 5 days up there.

While there has been quite a few success stories on the north end of Logan in 60 feet of water (just look for the waterfall), I mostly had my success just south of the mouth in 70-90 feet. 38 feet down, with anchovy, green flasher, 7 foot leader, anchovy special teaser. Monitor channel 6 and listen for "no bananas"? There is a lot of good local information there! The two of us limited, while others were struggling?

So, may I ask a question? Do you think I can get my boat into Gallaughers, without problems? LOA 30.5, beam 10.8, draft 1.8 engines up? Bob is thinking I might, as he has not had one that size there? I am thinking I should be fine?

It might be tight in there, Charlie as it's not a very wide channel at his wharf.

T2's right and you may only be able to get in and out at high tide as you have to cross a gravel bar to get into that channel.

The beach was slow on the weekend - from East Point to Logan. Things definitely cooled off. Coho everywhere in the strait though. Unfortunately, it is hard to find the hatchery fish. If they would only change the reg to the first two ho's caught, many fish would be saved.
 
Just got back , things have slowed down quite a bit but the springs are still there , got 3 , 1 at Logan and 2 between the rockpile and mermaid falls close by Camper.
All on green flasher , blue/green/chrome JdF heads , 70 in leaders , fished at 27 to 33 feet.

Just got back too from a 2 day trip. Real slow I would word it - along the beaches. Even the top rods work hard to get 1 or two fish per day. Talk to few guys and listened to the guide's radio chatter - all slow. At the tidelines there are a bunch of pinks and cohos. On the bank it looks a little better it seems but for our boat out of reach.

August 26 Port Renfrew Fishing Report

A couple of reports this week out of Port Renfrew.

Trevor from No Bananas Fishing Charters reports: "salmon fishing has slowed considerably both the beach and Swiftsure Bank. Halibut is still hot between the Chicken Ranch and the J bouy. The Bank is still producing lots of coho and the odd spring salmon. Logan and East Point are the hotspots for beach fishing although its quite slow. Any real bite has been on the high slack. Here's a pic of a 41 pound spring salmon."

Kelly from Last Chance Fishing Charters reports from last weekend: "Swiftsure Bank is hopping, south side has been good for hatchery coho up to 15 pounds. Small spring salmon on the south side trolling large spoons 50-150 feet, more springs down deep, bigger ones up top. Halibut at J Bouy, bigger halibut east of the bouy on an ebb tide. Salmon fishing spotty along the shore, I suspect it to get better as we wait for the next rain. Good
colours for me on the beach have been a Chartreuse Krippled Anchovy with Reg/Glow Flasher, and the biggest Anchovies/small herring I could find. Crabbing has been poor".

So....sounds like the fishing isn't as good as it has been for the last few weeks, but still some pretty good potential, especially out at Swiftsure Bank. With the halibut limit now 2 per day, it is a good time to get out there and catch some flat fish....out of the ocean, into the fish n chips!

Fished Renfrew yesterday (Friday) We had 4 springs on, landed 2 to 25lbs. 1 of lost to a seal, snatch and grab and he ran right to shore with it, we got to close to the surf and had to break off. Very rough/swelly and lumpy along the coast, very little wind but it was rough out from swelly and tidle. First fish was right at first light at the Rock Pile.. then trolled up to Logan.. by the time we got there heard a report on the radio one boat had 4 in the bucket there.. One boat I heard went to Nitnat and then came back to Logan after hearing the 4 in the bucket report.. We stayed at logan for the rest of the day where we had the other 3 of our hook ups..
the 25lber. was a mature female, quite dark. Again both fish were females ! Seems like all the fish are females.. where are all the males ? I bet the big males are still to come through !! ??
