Port Renfrew 2009 Season

I had family in town and they were all smelt fishing on the beach yesterday, very poor for smelts, they caught 4 smelt! now 4 years in a row basically no smelt ! where did all those big runs of smelt go??
They did manage about a half a bucket of Anchovie ! When I saw what they had caught my eyes lit up ! I went through them all and picked out about a dozen of the undamaged ones and saved them for salmon bait ! [:p]

Just got back from a quick trip with Yote.
Fished East Point last night from 6-8:30. Tons of shakers but no good fish.
Fished Logan today from sun up to 1:00 and caught 4 springs up to 27lb. Tons of undersize chinook, wild coho and bass. Went through 6 packs of bait!
Bite started around 9 am. Calm as I have ever seen Renfrew.
Great trip Yote. Thanks.

Tips

Forgot to add that when we arrived Tuesday afternoon there was a 42lb hatchery on the dock. I was told there was a 43lb hatchery recently also.

Tips

I'll be there on the tenth. Any size to the coho these days or are they still under 10 pounds for now?
Sounds like things have been o.k there and hope it gets real good there next week

Fished Renfrew today Logan creek it was incredible. Flat calm all day. Got two 30lbers, one 28 lber and one 22 lber and two 5 lb hatchery coho. Fish 6am - noon. Coho were everywhere in 150-170 ft off Camper Creek. Double and triple header. I was using just spoons no flasher. all fish were taken at 37, 47 and 57 feet. The Day was just awesome. Cheers.

Left Sunday the 2nd, spent the night anchored in Oak Bay after clearing Customs. Monday morning had both fog and a 30 knot wind? That made moving on to Renfrew Monday a little slow. Of course, we also had to stop at Beechie to catch a couple of fish. Saw lots of whales, both Orcas and Humpbacks the whole trip.

Ran out to Swiftsure the 4th, with "juandesooka". John is very knowledgeable, friendly, entertaining and just an outright pleasure to fish with! The only problem I had, John promised I could play a Spring on one of his Canadian reels. He fell short there, but we had a good trip out to the north side of the closure. That was our first run and we managed to keep 7 Springs, 2 Halibut, 2or 3 Pinks, and 2 or 3 hatchery Coho. There were tons of smaller Springs and wild Coho released, but no Springs over the mid teens. Some were caught off spoons close to bottom and some on anchovies between 90 and 110 feet. Halibut where taken with Berkley's white grub. We stopped at Logan on the way in for the evening bite, but nothing kept.

Went out the 5th and stopped at Camper where we were picking up wild Coho and smaller Spring all over the place and decided to move on to Logan. Got to Logan, dropped our lines just to the east in 75-90 feet of water and "limited" with Springs from 20-30 pounds. My son-in-law has officially joined the "Tyee" club catching his first at an even 30 pounds, which he also had the pleasure of repeating more than a couple of times. Logan had large fish the entire trip and they were all over the place. There were large bait balls and it was very fishy. I fished along side of "No Bananas", one day and I can attest "bananas" Trevor knows where and how to catch fish! I met up with him at the gas dock, but didn't get to chat long, as I had to move my boat off.

Went back to Logan on the 6th and started practicing some catch and release. All but one was released and they were mostly in the low teens. The one kept was a the mid teens and that only left us with 3 for our possession limit. The 7th everything brought in was less than 15 lbs, so all fish went back. The morning of the 8th, we got our lines in the water at 6:45 and had our 3 Springs in the boat by 8:15am, 2 just over 30 and one in the high 20's. Nice fat fish!

All but one of the larger Springs where caught on a green flasher, with green glow "anchovy special" teaser, on 7 foot leaders, in 70-90 feet of water and down 38 feet. Most of the hatchery Coho was around 5-6 pounds, while the wild seemed to be coming in closer to the 8-10 pound range. We hooked and released some really nice wild Coho!

Crab limits where taken every day, with chicken out fishing both salmon and halibut for the crab? Yea, surprises me, too! And, having a green light in the traps did out produce the non lighted pots.

Weather was beautiful, with wind only on the trip up and one afternoon, creating some chop. Every morning was early morning fog turning into an overcast day. Ideal fishing weather!

Great time, met some great people!

Apparently the fishing in Renfrew continues to be very very good. This is rubbing salt in my wounds, as I can't go! :(

"fishing has been unreal for the last week with an average of 15 to 20 hookups a day with it peaking yesterday...we played 20 springs before 11am the largest at 30lbs. Today has slowed down but we have one in the boat close to 40".

Port Renfrew Marina's report:
http://www.portrenfrewmarina.com/report/index.php

Well August is here and so are the BIG CHINOOK! Fishing at Port Renfrew Marina has been fantastic this month. Fishing along the shore has been excellent for tyee plus spring salmon. Lots of boats are reporting 10 to 15 fish days in the last week. Very calm seas have allowed even the smaller boats to get to the fishing spots west as far as Logan Creek. As we are writing this report we are getting news that fishing has got even hotter with more springs than ever today! More in the 30’s and 40’s!!

August 8th saw at least 150 springs land on Port Renfrew Marina’s docks. Many over the 30 pound range, usually 6 or more and at least one over 40 pounds each day. A lure of choice seems to be the purple haze teaser heads, the green and white glows.

Offshore halibut and spring salmon fishing is still very good with the 170 at the west end of the Swiftsure Bank being the current hot spot. Spoons and plugs are working well there, the favorites being the pearly whites with rainbow colors.

Coho have moved a bit off the beach much to everyone’s relief as they can now keep bait in the water for more than 30 seconds. If you are looking for Coho you won’t be disappointed. Some hatchery fish have been hitting the 17 pound mark already. This has the makings of an incredible fall fishery. Yahoo! Big northerns!

Important Dates: Port Renfrew Marina will be having it’s annual Labor Day Derby coming up on Sept. 5th and 6th. This will be our 12th derby and it is beginning to look like it’s going to be a great one. The donations that have been coming in are very generous and we are very excited to see how much money we can raise for our local hatchery. As we said before this hatchery has not had an government fund increase since 1992 so it is very important to all of us that this event be a huge success. The tickets are $50.00 a rod and include a t-shirt, dinner, beverages and a live band. There will be raffles and hidden weight prizes. We are now selling tickets for a APS Outboard motor with the help of M & M Marine. It is a 9.9HP 4 stoke with a long shaft and retails for $2000.00. This outboard has identical fittings to a Yamaha. Tickets are available at the marina and are 1 for $10.00 or 3 for $25.00. If you are a business or individual who would like to donate to this derby please contact us by e-mail or by phone at 250 483-1878 or 1 866 565-2354. All donations are greatly appreciated and we thank each and every person or business that has given a donation. The very success of this derby depends hugely on the generosity of the donors.

Port Renfrew Marina is also having the Coho Derby on Oct. 3rd and 4th. This derby is winner take all. This year the tickets will be $25.00 with $5.00 from each ticket going to the hatchery. The way things look right now with the Coho this could be quite an exciting derby so please try and support this one also and help your local hatchery while having a wonderful time. Check previous years for winnings!

Please Note: If anyone is wondering, our ATM is still working and it seems that the problem has been resolved and we can rely on it for the rest of the season. Please note that we are a cash only business so please come prepared. Campfires are NOT now allowed at this time. Sorry for the confusion, we were told the campfires were ok and now they aren’t. It is very important that you check the regulations for yourself to avoid a big fine.

Well got back from a trip to Renfrew. Were there for 3 days. 2 spent off shore. Caught Halis easy enough but they were smaller this year than last. Tons of Coho. Caught some real good ones aas well. In the 2 days of shore I would say we had 4 that were from the 12-14 pound range. A lot of real small ones as well.
Spent the last day on Logan with the mass of boats. Landed 7 with the largest at 28lbs and the smallest probably around 15. We had a couple others on and soem inexperience at setting hooks at a few others. All in all it was a great time. Plan on being back and maybe doing a big trip next year for a week. There were a few really nice fish caught while we were there with a few in the 40+lb range and one nice Hali that must have bee over 80 or 90lbs
One boat that seemed to do well was Steve Frenche's boat. Don't know him at all and if he is on here then all I can say is good job. He seemed to be fairly consistent and got some real good sized fish.
