Port Renfrew 2009 Season

Great day fishing Swiftsure for us today in my boat. Wind call looked bad, weren't sure my boat could handle it, turned out to be as glassy a day as I've been out there.

Limit of small chicken halibut, then a whole lotta salmon, springs, coho, and pinks. Pretty much nonstop action on hootchies, could barely keep gear in the water, a half dozen double headers at least. Most of them throw backs, but lots of fun to be had. However, only got into one sizier spring, about 20 pounds.

Pretty amazing orca show just outside camper creek...pretty much ended our chances for an evening bite I figure, trolled around for an hour, not a sniff.

Anyways, a good day.

Fished East point on Saturday for a few hours with 2 in the 20's in the boat.

Sunday we went out to Swiftsure with Ace of Kings. Long story short we were headed back at 1:30 with limits of springs, hatchery coho, 1pink and halibut for 5. Awesome day, thanks to Mark! We also saw an albatross skimming the surface, that was cool, and a grey whale breached 100m off our stern. Wow!

Getting quite a few on the troll while salmon fishing then droping the halli rods to finsh the day.

Hi never been to Renfrew, cant make it to nootka this year so thought we would try somewhere closer. would we be able to get around in 16 ft open aluminum, and is there camping or motels. thxs Dave

If you watch the weather close, stick to the beach - Logan/Camper etc, 16' is fine on a nice day (appreciating that its dicey through the river mouth on lower tides)...I wouldn't take it out to the banks by any means though.

Places to stay for sure - there is a campground at the launch, but usually pretty swamped - also more woodsy places around as well...

otherwise, pick and choose from here as a starting point:

I have quite a bit of info on Renfrew, I can send to you if you want to email me?

Cerrantes,East Point and the whistle buoy are all great spots to fish in a boat that size.Much calmer than Logan and Camper and a lot closer to the dock if and when it starts to get snotty.
Camping and moorage at the marina is first come first serve so it may be the only hitch- call ahead before you try. There are other spots around to camp too.

I fish a friend's small skiff out there sometimes in summer, and generally about East Point being a good bet in a small boat.

One exception though...if the wind is blowing offshore, the harbour seems to funnel it and it can get pretty snotty by the time it reaches East Point -- yet around the corner at Camper it is glassy and perfect. I've had a few wet crossings in a decent chop, had to put on the Mustang suit, and then calm once past the point.

Has anybody spent time bottom fishing between San Juan Pt and Sombrio? If the weather limits a bank trip thought I might give it a go.

Hey guys, glad to hear that Renfrew is picking up some. I plan on going in August and giving it a go. When would the best time to go be? I plan on going the 10th of August but could wait and go later near the end. Any pros or cons of either? I am new to it all but want to make the best of it. What can I expect for average fish size from the 10th or the end of Agust into Sept? Any thought would be great

fished Sat and couple hours this morning. no springs for myself. fished camper and the rock pile.
guides getting a few at the bank by the sounds of it.
Tons of coho in about 300-400 ft of water 20-60 ft on the rigger.

how far off shore are the coho? Im hearing 150' to now 300-400' of water, but what is that about 2 miles off shore?

Fished Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm and got two springs, one around 12 lb at Camper and one around 25 lb at Owen Point. Both on cut plug. Seemed slow that day for springs on shore. These were the only two bites.
