How is the fishing in late September between Campbell River and Port Mcneil. We are doing a trip for a week through islands ending up in Campbell River. Will there be coho or chums around yet, or should we leave the fishing poles at home. Thanks TG

I don't know if there will be fish there then but there should be. I always thought the main purpose of boating was to get you to the next spot so you can start fishing again. I would bring the rods and give it a try for about 6 hours per day but that's just me.

Chum fishing usually starts near the end of sep around Browns Bay, just north of Campbell River. There should also be some northern Cohoe at that time also. Hope this helps. Tight Lines,.....BB

We used to fish the area around Kelsey Bay and north on the Van Island side at that time of year...haven't been in a few years but we used to pick up coho, chum and even the odd spring...fish around 90' along shoreline, especially off gravel banks...Abe&Al or any green flasher plus a light lime green glow hootchie used to do the job for us (leader under 40")

Lot of kelp and Johnstone Strait can get very nasty in an afternoon westerly and tide rips....fog on some mornings....suggest checking weather beforehand.

Kelsey Bay- used to jig for coho...north of old ferry dock and south of that dock as well. Big cruiseships sail through this passage frequently in summertime.
