I bought a new boat last year, a 27 foot Monaro, that I really like. For our maiden voyage, we motored up to Port Hardy sometime near the end of July. Fantastic trip! I had heard about the whirlpools but had never seen them, they are impressive and a little scary!
I want to go again this year and have a question about timing. We targeted Halibut pretty heavy last year and were totally skunked. Tried at Farquar Bank that looked like a real nice spot. Tried near the airport and out further in that big shoal north of Malcolm Island. Nothing. We have done really well in the same areas before in our other boat. That time of year wasn't so good for salmon either as the main runs had not arrived yet.
When is the best time to head up there with halibut a priority? Is the moon phase really that important, or the tides? If we go early August we could fish for salmon if halibut isn't producing. Would early July be better for halibut?
