Port Alice or Coal Harbour?

Will be going to Winter Harbour and I am wondering which is the better place to launch the boat and leave the trailer at. I don't want to come back and the trailer is gone.
Thanks

Can't answer your question about parking, but would suggest you give some thought about launching in Coal Harbour, and towing your trailer into Winter Harbour! One couple had trouble with their 22 footer and borrowed our trailer to tow their boat into Port Hardy for repairs, and towed it back. Did all this in one day. Great fishing for cohoes inside, and good fishing for springs and halis at the 50 fathom line. Just got back last night from Winter Harbour. Have a safe trip,.........BB P.S. Not a good idea to tow your boat all the way into WH!!!

I agree with launching at coal harbour, the only negative at that launch is the angle of the launch isn't very steep so you may have to get your back tires of your truck wet.

Decent launch in Port Alice but not much for places to park so make sure you have arrangements with a local. Nice people and a great little town.

Here is the two, you can make your own decisions.

Port Alice

Lots of parking, if the lower lot is full, then just go across the road to the upper lot.

Free to launch and park, pretty safe to leave your trailer.

Good all tide launch, wharf to tie up to and a cleaning table (If needed)

A windy road into Port Alice with a couple of small hills.

Same distance to travel to WH as from Coal Harbour.

Not much for amenities if you need to pick up soem last minute things before you leave.

It will be a longer drive for you if you take your truck to WH. Add an extra 80k for the travel into PA and a return trip

Coal Harbour

Crappy launch ramp at low tide, have seen some folks with big boats either put their rear axel of their truck under water to get their boat on the trailer or wait until the tide was high. It is not a boat launch, but is an old whaling station and float plane ramp.

Costs to launch and park, and some times you need to park your trailer in one loaction and your truck in another.

Has been know to have a high percentage of trucks broken into while parked there.

Easy drive, with a flat and easy road from Port Hardy.

Port Hardy is 13 k away so there is easy access to all the extra things that you might need.

Pretty neat run through Quatsino Narrows on a good flood or ebb tide.

Less driving if you are taking your truck to WH.

I personally launch at Port Alice due to no cost, easy in and out and a cleaning table. I am a cheap ba$tard when it comes to saving money. But I do not take my truck to WH.

Either will get you to great fishing and some pretty amazing country.

Cheers

Nothing wrong with Rupert Arm! Might want to look into it? :)

At Coal Harbour... I would be locking the gas cap! :(:(

If you don't mind a low gradient gravel launch with no dock to tie up to. You will need to beach your boat. OK for small boats, not big ones. Very little for parking as well.

Will be taking the truck to Winter Harbour but will leave the trailer at the launch location. I can travel a little faster in the truck without pulling the trailer to WH.

Travelled in and out of WH, 23,25,28jun, 01,03 and the 5jul, and never met a logging truck. Must of been my lucky days, or maybe the trucks, lol. Tight |Lines,......BB

Wow! I am not sure I would leave a trailer at Coal Harbour by itself? It is probably worth the extra time to tow it to WH and I am quite sure safer at WH then CH? [?]

The road to PA is windy but they paved it last year so it is not bumpy. I say launch at PA.
The gas station has a good supply of gear at very fair prices, there is a liquor store and food market one block from the launch, and your truck and trailer is considerably safer there.
