Poll: Where Would You Settle Down IF You Were Retired And Just Wanted To Maximize Fishing Opportunities????

Everywhere is a compromise. Great fishing with full seasons mean isolation. Campbell river is the best I could think of but I would still be trailering to Hardy, Winter harbor, or Nootka. Wouldn't work for me personally as family, winter sports, and my Stillwater addiction will keep me in the interior. My boat stays up in Hardy June July and most of August.

I live in Nanaimo and it is quite central to most fishing spots on the Island. The fishing here has been strong all summer. One hour to Port Alberni where you can access Bamfield or even Uky by boat. French Creek is a short drive away and Campbell River is about an hour and a half.

Thanks for the suggestions, Gents. Very helpful! Meanwhile, I just saw this same Haida Gwaii listing last night in my search….I’m heading there next month and might go take a look …. Maybe a bit more house then I’d want and the isolation would be intense but I might go take a look just to see Robertson Island.

Haida Gwaii would def cover both my salmon and steelhead habit but I’d rather sub-contract out the Hecate Strait boat exposure thing to BC ferries….I’ve sat numerous times on the East side of Hecate looking out across to the other side and truth is, I get queasy thinking of making the run there and back alone … I know some guys on this site do that run regularly but not I (said the cat who’s burned through 8 1/2 of its lives already)

Then there’s this place….if I win the lottery I’d be all over it…I get light-headed just thinking just how amazing it would be to spend a winter out there watching the storms come in!!!

I would never think of Haida Gwai based on remoteness, weather, FN question marks with closures and not wanting others there and changing restrictions.

Alberni Inlet is probably the safest option for multi species openings consistently....PA, Uki, Bamfield.
Any thoughts on Westport WA? Lings, Hali's, regular salmon openings, consistent chance at albacore.

I hear you about Haida Gwaii—it’s about as remote as you can get …I talk to people on the ferry every October who go back and forth to Rupert for stuff like eye exams and teeth cleaning…that’s a twelve hour round trip and probably a hotel room for things you and I do in our neighborhood…and yes, I’ve read some of the stories and seen the vids of FN harassment of the sport guys…it seems to be an unfortunate trend…also happening on the mainland with the Gitxsan against the steelhead crowd etc

But I keep going back there because of the remoteness…you can spend days on some of the rivers without seeing a soul… there’s a price to pay for remote locations if you live there, though…..no doubt

I appreciate the suggestion about a place like Westport though it’s a bit too busy for me. And quite honestly, I’m watching this country start swirling around the toilet bowl with the current administration and I’d be lying if I told you my desire to go north of the border is just about the outdoor stuff..

I’ve been considering PA—I really like that part of Van Isle…Grappler looks like a good spot but I get the feeling not too much real estate comes on the market up there and if it does it gets snapped up quickly.

Campbell River, best combo of fishing opportunities, size of town, weather, access to all parts of the island, amenities. Only town with a rowboat club trying to catch 30+ pound chinook. Wifes work keeps me located in Nanaimo otherwise I would move up island in a heartbeat.

There are a couple key points that haven't really been addressed,
Price range and need for essential services. ?? (maybe the sky is the limit 😉)
doctor/hospital proximity might be an issue with some of the more remote communities

2 older places that are waterfront for sale in grappler atm.

love bam, but if i wanted a reset due to property values and quiet.. access to tuna etc, winter harbour would be it. i would do winter harbour for sure.

Cottage country in Ontario is taking some huge losses and I’ve never seen more properties in sale in Tofino and other parts of vancouver island. There may be a lot of price drops in the next few months and new year as mortgages reset. As rents fall and the economy weakens with less Airbnb, waterfront homes might be under water.

I see so many seniors on the gulf islands and remote communities. As health issues increase the commutes become tiring….

The question was maximizing fishing opportunities though.

Prices are not going down tho have a coworker house been on the market for 6 months , realtor keeps telling them not to reduce it will sell

It sounds like Realtors in in the lower mainland and other parts of the country are a little more realistic, telling clients to price aggressively when listing, before someone else takes a low offer on a nearby property that is accepted and there is a new comparable at much much lower price. Most mortgages renew in the new year. I’m in the renewal boat and paying down dept before the renewal. I would not want to be holding an unsold property November 1st.

I don’t think any of the pre-sale 30 townhouses in Saanich at the end of my street have sold in 135 days, and they are priced at about 1/2 of what a new townhouse in vancouver would be. I couldn’t imagine carrying the 4M in debt or equity plus development costs tied up in the 3 properties.

I think it’s a good time to make offers in late September October as properties start to sit or if patient February when Christmas credit cards come due. 80+ properties in Ukee and 14 in salmon beach and 40 in Tofino for sale. Really nice ones of course are rare. No steals on chestermans beach.

I’ve never thought too much about essential services before although this October I’ll be turning 74 —-suddenly the prospects of moving to a remote location definitely sobers a guy up when in my age bracket…

That spot on Bamfield near Brady’s would tick all the boxes for me except if for some reason I had to find those essential services in December during a storm…

The comments about CR having a new modern hospital got my attention but the listings on or near the water are pretty steep.

Good advise to wait until end of the year to see if there’s any market pull back….down here it’s definitely started already

Yes old guys need to stay near some sort of medical services

Please don't underestimate the ongoing problem of access to Advanced Health Care.

Getting a family doctor is one challenge, but being able to get fast access to advanced medical care as we age is crucial.

Vancouver (including the greater lower mainland), Victoria, Kelowna, and to a lesser extent Nanaimo have good medical services.

We have had friends who retired to the Sunshine Coast and in one case both of them as their health declined (the husband has since died ) were always on ferries and he was often Medevac'd to VGH . She still lives on the Coast and has to go every 3 months to see her specialist.

BC Ferries is really good about getting guaranteed loading for folks heading down for things at BC Cancer.

Years ago (mid 1990's) when one bedroom condos in Vancouver were under 150 K I had two clients who retired about a year apart and each bought big homes on the lake in Kelowna. The first one to retire asked me if I had any advice.

I told him to buy one of those cheap condos and keep that as their permanent residence. He asked why and I explained he would stay in the lower mainland healthcare system and would always have local's access to the best facilities.

He and his wife bought a condo and a year later the other couple did the same.

In both cases they were able to get faster treatment because they were permanent residents of in Vancouver. They didn't change their address on the Care Card, Driver's License, CRA, Bank Statements, etc.

If you buy and live near good access to medical care it may make your retirement years far easier to manage, and could help to make it longer,

I love ukee and Bamfield but the weather can be tough. I'd say Comox, Cowichan, Brentwood Bay, North Saanich. There was a condo with a dock in Campbell River that looked cheap not to long ago. I like the idea of the sunshine coast but two ferries is one to many for me, but you’ll have a boat so to hell with bc ferries
No. stay away from that place. leakier than swiss cheese. strata fees are pretty much as high as mortgage payment to boot
