Strange. I applied for a new number last June 2025. Mine expires June 30/2035.

Im behind the curve on the how's and why's of this thing but mine expires jan 31 2026 yay
Unless you keep yours on your trailer, I know that the Civic Marina‘s in Vancouver insist that you prove that your registration is up-to-date. That’s what prompted me to update mine last year which got me to 2035.

It will be interesting to see how soon Marinas will beging checking to see if their moorage customers are up to date.

I expect that Marine Insurers will be rewriiting Policy Definitions and wording to make current licensing a condition of coverage remaining in force.

If the insurers do something like this, then it will have a domino effect. Want to book moorage at a marina for an overnight? What is your boat registration number?

If a boat's registration is not up to date and a vessel is stopped on the water how will marine units be instucted to deal with those situations?

This might drive a fundamental change in the status of a lot of boats.

June 2035 for me.

Who is going to be stopping/checking PCLs on the water? As is there are lots of boats out there without any numbers.

DFO? Boat licensing isn't their mandate.

Coast Guard? They won't be using their limited resources to police that.

RCMP? Same. Unless you're also drinking and being a fool, they'll not be chasing down fishermen.

Another batch of costly bureaucracy from the feds that wastes more money than it collects.

Some fishing friends were stopped at Sandheads or a boat ramp last year. The PCL was one of the first things they were asked to provide.

Agreed, however it will give clear and concise reason to remove derelict vessels. Biggest issue for most of us will be mooring if it lapses as it's easy for a marina to check. It's been pretty much an honesty system to transfer registration up until this point and really up to the new owner when ownership transfers which probably doesn't happen as much as it should. What if the RCMP or CG showed up at your door saying your boat that you sold many years ago burned down a bunch of big yachts in a fancy marina? Or was left derelict and sank and leaked fuel and oil into a highly sensitive eco system? And at the end of the day what else costs $4.80 (or $2.40 in your case) a year on your boat?

The issue is paying tax for the 10th time on a used boat. Complete BS.

Mine expired July 2024..... wtf .... no notification or anything.... should I renew or bother..... my registration has no such expiry date on it.
