It hasn't been posted on this forum and all the chaos on the conservation board has now dropped it out of site over there. This is a serious junction as fishing south island goes and I'd hate to see the sad 60 person turnout they had last spring. This IS our 1 on 1 with DFO - their runner boy or boys are there, our message can be delivered directly to them and well, 60 people do not intimidate. I regret that I am not there (an Australia trip booked 8 months ago, so no ragging now..lol)....I really want to hear it loaded in there like it was for the halibut meeting that SFI put on. So get your buddies out and GET IN THEIR GRILL!

Excerpts from Chris Bos (clarifying what he thought was a possible salmon closure for the summer run)....see more in the conservation thread.

I would like to clarify my earlier email about the Victoria SFAB Committee meeting on Wednesday March 21st 2012. (text copied below). I used the phrase
"It is with great concern I share with you that DFO are now suggesting that this summer's chinook salmon fishery may be closed."

Having just spoken directly to DFO about this matter, I was informed that my earlier suggestion was in fact incorrect. I misunderstood this information after conversations with people who attended a recent SFAB/DFO meeting in Vancouver about Fraser chinook stocks, that a closure was indeed a possibility. DFO is considering management measures related to summer-run Fraser River 5-2 and 4-2 chinook. But I have learnt a fishing closure is not being considered at this time.

It is my understanding that summer-run Fraser River 5-2 and 4-2 chinook brood year, due to return as adults this summer, were in extremely low numbers when out-migrating as juveniles. Therefore, there is some uncertainty around the abundance of adults returning this year. The objective for DFO to achieve a 30,000 chinook river count to meet conservation objectives has brought about these management discussions and considerations. If it appears the number of Fraser chinook returning is below 30,000 then DFO are likely to implement further management measures on the recreational fishery. This issue will be covered in much more detail at the 21st March SFAB meeting regarding what measures are being considered and when measures might come into effect.

In conclusion, let me apologise for inadvertently creating a misconception amongst local anglers. It was not my intent to alarm anyone, hence I originally used the term "... may be closed" and not stating it will be closed. This does however highlight the importance of attending the March 21st SFAB meeting. Clearly this meeting is your opportunity to hear DFO first hand what new plans they have for us, learn about the process, ask questions and give your input to the SFAB, which is very important.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 21st,

Regards,

Chris

ILL be going for sure and any sooke people that want to hitch a ride let me know ... LIPPY??

Waste of time. I do though encourage people that have not gone to these to attend though so you are informed.....

High Five

I hate to admit it, but i think you're right.
Once DFO have planned a strategy, i don't think meetings are gonna change it.
From the ones i've attended the representative is usually a C.O. sent to take the heat,
but incapable of any real decision making.

BUT you have to remeber when there is a room full of pissed off fisherman trust me it get back to the head office the more people there the better call it itimidation, WE need to say we are done and tired of this and send that message to whoever is coming and stand our ground will it help you never knpow but at least you can hold your head up and said you were there to stand up for it and be proud you did!!!!!!

So lets ALL go and stand up for yourself and the future "the kids coming up behind us" I dont want my 3 yr old nephew say to me in 15 years why didnt you fight for me back then so I can fish too?????

Deewar and Gumpucky are right- For these meetings to be anything more than an utter failure we ALL need to pack that house, everytime! The first thing to be noticed will be the sheer volume of people present.
go to the meeting to voice your discontent, go to listen, or even go because the pub next door has wing night. JUST GO!

I will be there with two others that ,like me, are sickened with the DFO incompetence, and the time has come for me to be proactive, not reactive!

I'll be there and hope to bring a truck load. I think it's like voting "Don't Vote, Don't *****" and right now we have a lot to ***** about.

high five, I know where you are coming from, but from the meetings I have been to in past as you know, we have barely had more than 100 there (think it was 65 last year...ALL OF VICTORIA...65??????). This is the first year that the summer chinook are under fire and now is the wrong time to give up. Victoria has never shown they have cared and also, the meetings have suffered from lack of advertisement. Of course DFO can walk all over us. Remember the halibut meeting with 300+? Lots of advertisement, radio ads etc etc - THAT would have an effect as it was packed, but of course, DFO wasn't there. You cant give up until we have really seen if there is an effect as wolf says of 300 angry fisherman getting in DFO's face.

Hey Roy I agree with you with you I just am starting to think there has to be some more effective way that's all. Last year same bad news and not many showed. It amazes me you can fill place end to end on halibut seminar, and I know if I took all the anglers JDF that room would be over capacity. Again I am not trying to derail this. I really tried..... I am not going way from this just trying to see if I can do something or get involved with something that might be more effective.

High Five

I appreciate your frustration........ a lot of us are frustrated. But to say that you encourage others to go to these meeting and say that you aren't going doesn't send a good message, in my opinion. Maybe just don't go. I feel the same as you, i've been going for over 20 yrs and am getting worn down when there are only less than 10 of us attending the Tofino/Ucluelet meetings.

I COULD NOT DO IT...I COULD NOT QUIT BEFORE I KNEW THAT YOU WERE COMMITTED! I WANT 300 OF YOU TO SHOW UP! YOU NEED TO BE THERE OR SIMPLY QUIT THIS WEBSITE! NEVER SHOW YOUR FACE HERE OR ON ANY OTHER INTERNET WEBSITE AGAIN IN YOUR LIFE! THAT IS UNTIL YOU PERSONALLY DECIDE TO MAKE THE EFFORT TO CHALLENGE THE PROCESS...

I agree with this.

They need to do a Press Release, we need over flow... This affect every Canadian not just Anglers

Yes I agree completely. Someone get the meeting advertised on the radio.

I'm going to try to get a few from the mid Island area to come down. Hell, Wolf said he'd buy me a beer afterwards. Sound's good to me:cool:

If people decide not to go for any personal reason they may have...what kind of message does that send Chris Bos. Go if only to support Chris and the other board members who work unselfishly on your behalf. I know the freebe hours these guys put in far outnumber the couple it takes to get through a meeting.

If you want to send a message about the issue's at hand this is one of the way's to do it. Pack the place with overflow!!!

I attended the halibut seminar like alot of folks. I thought it was really cool to see so many fisherman from all walks of life heading into the hotel. I mean the parking lot was packed with all these great folks walking in there for something we all wanted to learn from etc. It was a really cool experience. We don't see that everyday.
