@Sculpin,

I use anything lead, ingots to scrap...as long as it melts and it's lead, I use it.

Here is my first finished 1 lbs Big Eyed Squid jig for halibut & bottom fish - It is glow and UV head, UV body and it has a built in flow adjusting scent chamber which is soft and is glow the dark also.

DHA, the squid jig is awesome...even I want to take a bite.

You've motivated me to toy around in the same respect this off-season. picking up a mold or two this weekend...kinda think I should pick up a third blank mold to machine out myself as your creativity has got my wheels turning.

Great thread and work!

Those squid jigs look great DHA! Are you going to make some up for the store or are they just for personal use? Anyways I would love to buy a few off of ya.

Rob.....I think you are really onto something with those jigs you are making.

If you ever start selling those to the public I'm in.....

I make jigs all the time in my basement and the two number one problems are getting a finish that lasts...and also having a built -in glow capability.

The vinyl finish is no doubt far and away better than most available paints . I've seen your videos where you apply the vinyl so that it won't come off when your bashing it with a sledge hammer.

The reason I keep doing-over mine is:- the paint doesn't last on most new jigs, they keep making the same color selection over and over, and the bend isn't right in a lot of them.
You seem to have addressed these issues.

Absolutely good work , man!!!.....

Here is the next profile that I will be playing with - some people call them a JUMBO ANCHOVY. :)

Saw those jigs today. Solid work DHA. I can attest they are as good looking in person as the pictures. The vinyl coating is tough as nails. Good thinking buds. Love the sent chamber too. Let me know when you have the production line rollin'!

Even well seasoned lead melting veterans can fail at "Lead Handling 101"! ;)

Today, I was melting down some old tire weights that I had sitting around doing nothing. Everything was going great for the first hour...then hit a pail of tire weights that had water in it. I new as soon as I dumped it that there was going to be trouble. I quickly turned away, and then just as I did, KAbooom! A huge blast that shot molten lead 15 feet into the air and then landing all over me. We had about 600lbs in the pot, about 12lbs shot out with about three to four pounds landing on me. I take lead safety very serious and so should you - whether you are a beginner, novice or pro...ya gotta pay attention to what you are doing. Thankfully no pain for me. :)

Rob DHA
lucky boy
have done a bit of lead casting in my time
yep water and hot lead don't mix also good to see your wearing respirator

if your casting inside/outside try doing on a bench and have a large fan blowing the fumes away from where your standing if inside make sure there is a extractor fan going constantly

and if your going to do it a lot do get med check as doing it full time is not good for ones health
especially if your melting down tire weights

here is the weights i used to make

back in the UK for the lads on the lakes fishing for carp

2oz in line feeder lead
3.5 oz pear lead
both plastic coated
weighted controller floating egg

@wildthing - absolutely agree that I was lucky! Just one little burn on my elbow where the lead melted right through. In all of my years handling lead, never have I had such a close call. I normally check any pails for moisture, this time I was careless. Like I said, ever seasoned veteran lead melter's can fail "Lead Handling 101"! LOL :)

I am thinking about using a single hook rather than a treble on the squid jigs. My reasoning is, so that the jig would not hang up as easily on bottom as a treble would...what ya'll think?
