I spent 32 years as an RCMP officer. For twenty-two of those years I was a Police Dog Handler. I worked 3 different dogs over that time period.
During those years, my working dogs were responsible for locating numerous missing persons including hunters, mushroom pickers, the elderly and children.
They apprehended countless fleeing criminals including, murderers, rapists and property crime offenders.
They located stolen property and physical evidence used in crimes, including firearms and knives.
Across Canada, Police Service Dogs stand beside officers every single day. They track the lost, protect the vulnerable, locate evidence, and face danger without hesitation. They do not ask for recognition, they do not question the risk, they simply serve.
These incredible animals give the best years of their lives to keeping Canadians safe. Yet when their service ends, their families are often left to carry the financial burden of medical care for injuries and health issues that came from years on the front line.
This petition does not apply to every Police Service Dog across the country, simply as there is now way for a single petition to govern that. It does however specifically seeks to support those that fall under the federal government’s ministries and agencies that utilize them, as the Federal government can commit to this, AND THEY SHOULD. This includes the RCMP and other federal policing bodies whose service dogs protect Canadians coast to coast.
This is not about questioning the use of police dogs, they are essential and they make us all safer. It is about honouring their service and ensuring they can live out their retirement healthy, comfortable, and cared for, just as they deserve.
I kept all three of my dogs when they retired. I paid for all of their food and medical bills. I also paid to have them euthanized and cremated.
I do not regret spending one cent of that money.
This petition is to help others who will care for these dogs during their retirement years. Not all handlers keep their retired dogs and many go to the general public who have expressed a desire to care for these animals. They absorb the full cost of caring for them.
If you feel that this petition is worthy of signing, then please do. Not everyone will agree and that is fine. Please give it some consideration.
Thank you
