Whirl Bay was red hot today for maybe 2 hours. Fast and furious action that I haven't had in a while with winters. Kept two feisty 9 - 10 lbs, let some more of similar size go, and a few that triggered the self-release mechanism. Purple Haze hootchie between 110 and 120' was the ticket. Were they ever agressive and really fought hard! Life was good today! [^]

There was 27lber from pedder bay weighed in at outfiters, also a 140lb hally from constance yesterday.

Not if you fish sydney or past sherringham pt!!!!!

I have a question for you guys. Suppose you launch at Sooke or Cheanuh and fish past Sherringham, if you catch and keep over 67 cm would you be running any sort of risk bringing it back into the restricted area when you are leaving? I know that you would have registered it on your license but will that be good enough?

That is plenty, the buden of proof is on the CO. If it is 5:00 AM, and you get tagged off the waterfront while in your 12 foot aluminium, you will probably have to explain to a judge. If you are in say an 18 footer, and tagged say around 1:00 in the afternoon, I could see them going for it.

Quite a few just look at the sydney derby!!!!

Sidney usualy has not bad salmon fishing from now until the end of april last year just before the port of sidney derby i was averaging 6-10 fish a morning with usualy a couple in the high teens or low twenties,i'm making arangments to get one of the boats over there as we speek.

103 salmon were weighted in at last years Sidney Derby

From last years Island Outfitters Fishing report

The Port Sidney Salmon Derby was held this past Friday and Saturday and it was a huge success. Bob Haney was the winning angler with a 21.8 lb spring that he caught near Saanichton Spit. Second place went to Brent Melvin for a 20.9 lb spring caught on cut plug. Third place went to Shiloh Matt for a 19.2 lb spring. It seems that salmon were being caught in most locations around the Sidney area. Seventy-eight springs were weighed in on Friday and 25 on Saturday. The killer whales went through on Saturday morning and most anglers blame them for the slowdown in action. The best fishing was close to the bottom in deeper water. Good baits have been Anchovy and Tiny Strip. Also working are 3.5” and 4” Coyote or Gypsy spoons in Silver/Green or Green/Glow. Plastic baits have been good too with the Green Ghost and the Jellyfish being the best patterns. Several halibut were caught on the weekend as well with a 70 lb fish caught near the Powder Wharf being the largest.

Fishing Sidney? It's the dead sea Thats what us locals are suppose to say.

Island Outfitters fishing report form May 8, 2006

Salmon anglers were focused on this past weekend’s Port of Sidney Salmon Derby. All told, 108 salmon were weighed in by anglers in 93 boats fishing over Friday and Saturday. The winning salmon was a 23.8 lb spring caught by Dave Kennedy. Dave’s catch was worth almost $20,000 in cash! Wow! Dave also placed 2nd just a couple of weeks ago in the Island Outfitters Halibut Derby! Dave caught his salmon near Saanichton Spit with the gear hanging straight down while he was fixing his motor! Second place went to Ken Moyes for a 22.6 lb spring caught near Sidney Spit. Third place went to Kirk Hepley for a 21.7 lb spring caught near Fairfax Point. Anglers recorded springs from all the spots from Wain Rock to James Island and over to Moresby Island. More than 50% of the fish were marked hatchery fish. The best fishing was deep and close to the bottom and a variety of lures caught fish. Purple Haze and Army Truck were the most successful colors both in hootchies and teaser heads. Purple Haze flashers were also effective.

Island Outfitters Fishing Report from May 2, 2005

The Port Sidney Salmon Derby was held this past weekend and 65 springs were weighed in at the derby. The winning fish was a 34.4 lb spring caught near Coal Island. Second place was taken by a 27 lb spring caught near the Powder Wharf and third went to a 23.9 lb spring also from near James Island. While Coal Island produced the largest fish, most of the salmon were caught near the southern end of James Island. Saancihton Spit wasn’t too bad for springs but Hambley and Fairfax Point were very slow. The average sized salmon went 14 lbs. The most productive baits during the derby were Anchovy or Tiny Strip fished in a Glow Rhys Davis teaser head, the Green/Glow coyote spoon and cut plug herring. Most of the salmon were caught close to the bottom.
