I was in Ucluelet last mid august and saw a lot of people overfishing thier allowable kept catch. One method used by a Vancouver guy was he had four kids and they wait at the dock and then they claim the fish. The other real obviuous crimminal activity I saw was
There was a U-all there with a big motorhome and catamaran style boat.He was catching and processing Halibat like it was going out of style.WHY dont we have more policing of this at the Island west Docks??I got a hold of the DFO and they did not seem to care?

If the guy had his kids on board with licenses, no problem.
If the kids are not on board, big problem if he gets checked on the water.
2 Springs per day per person. any more than that and he's breaking the law
and subject to fine and confiscation of gear.

Interesting? Craven is right and they DO check on the water there! If one is a larger boat, not showing fishing gear you probably won't get stopped on the water; however, if you are displaying gear or a smaller boat - You will get checked!

And in "mid August"? I believe those poachers just might be making a VERY BAD decision. Unless things have changed in the last couple of years that is one place NOT to be poaching. DFO is all over that area, until the end of mid August. I have been checked by "inforcement" (not creel) more in Ucluelet Inlet than any other place on the entire Island. Plus, there are creel surveys at Island West dock during that time frame?

Just a note to that processing comment - DFO does seem to look the other way when "normal" fisherman cut up fish and stick it into those one gallon freezer bags, I see that all the time, but still wouldn't recommend that at the docks, you will lose the fish; however, a large scale "canning" operation - you got to be kidding? That is just a matter of time and they will lose ALL, including the boat! I bet if you have either Island West or Oakbay call that in - DFO will come!

read what i said.He had kids meet him down at the boat after he came in and then they carry the fish up
I go there every year(island west) and fish Ucluelet mid August and have never seen any DFO personal either on the ocean or at the Island west docks

I never said it was a large scale canning operation? I said it was a american camped in a big Motorhome right beside the Island west pub and office. He was there for a month and was always bringing in halibait almost every day and then processing it so it seemed rather obvious in my mind he was overfishing and no one seemd to pay attentiion or even care

Did you report it or chew the guys out? Unfortantely that kind of stuff goes on at alot of the areas where people camp/motorhome for a period of time. Americans and Canadians. China creek is a good example. Guys camping all summer fishing socks, prawns, springs day after day.

So why didn't you make a phone call and have him investigated ?

A report "after the fact" is of no use to enforcement ....... is that what you meant as getting hold of DFO? Did you tell them you were prepared to go to Court as a witness?? And why wait until now to post on this board ? Strange..............

I call BS.

Most if not all visiting American fishermen respect our laws. If this were so obvious then some of the regulars down there would have done something about it. DFO would have been on there case and stopping them in there tracks.

Are you sure you are not one of those halibut slipper skippers that are just logging on here to spread your ugly lies? Your post count tells me you have zero credibility to be throwing accusations at our friends. In fact with your post count and join date it looks to me like another attempt to disrupt a united front on Halibut allocation.

I don't mean to be picky here, but in the initial post it did not say he was an "american camped in a big Motorhome". The fact that he is an american is beside the point, anyone who does something like that should immediately be reported.

nothing to do with an american or canadian its anglers from both countries that abuse the stocks. Anytime you have a large amount of fish that are easy to catch there will be plenty of guys going over their limit. I think every one of us has seen poaching of some form or another, this should tell you that its fairly common.

So it happened last Aug and it took you 9 months to finally complain about it???????

And I call BS on the email as you can call in reports, but not email them.....unless you emailed the Port office and expected them to"Get Right On It".

Why did you not call right away from the phone at the marina???

I also like the fact that you say they did not care.....how do you know that??? Did they tell you that they did not care???

This is the second post about slamming Americans from a new guy on here in the last week.....what up with you guys...are you bored????

Cheers

Wondering that very same thing Sitka...

There was a U-all there with a big motorhome and catamaran style boat.He was catching and processing Halibat like it was going out of style.

I basically live in Ukee all summer long, and have a fairly decent handle on who is about. Notwithstanding the suggestion that this particular instance occurred at Island West...

I happen to know an Island Lad who comes awfully close to that same description. He has been around for many years, and just acquired that Cat a couple ago now. Usually carries himself and two or three other anglers. Sometimes fishes amongst our group. VERY honest, VERY careful about the various Rules & Regs, and Polite to a Tee. I also happen to know that about that time period he, and a couple others I know, purchased several halibut directly from one of the commercial boats. In fact I helped set that transaction up and it was clearly all above board. And I pretty much think I know what his, and my position would be were anyone to label him as a poacher.

Best to get the facts straight before crying Wolf is what I'm saying. And if you suspect an infraction, CALL IT IN, as in NOW! DFO IS in the area, they ARE concerned over this type of behavior, and they WILL react in a timely manner.

Kinda wondering what "ticat" and / or "Hublocker" are going to come up with next...

Cheers,
Nog

Your right guys, I misread the Mercian bit but I stand by my point that this is a BS post by some slipper skipper. Poaching, sure it happens but the way this guy explains it says it’s obvious and out of control. How lame is that? Check out this post.

Same guy, who knows but it smells fishy to me.

Can this be confirmed by our one of our members from Ucluelet? If so then I would be asking those members why they didn’t stop it. Poachers around here are hunted down by DFO with great success. Not all have been caught but I think they know they are being hunted. Enforcement budgets are always under funded, we all know that but DFO would be happy to pick off poachers from the dock, way cheaper then a boat.

I see others are way faster type’rs then my peck and find.
Well said guys.

X2.... BULL ****! :)

I agree that the op is full of 'it'! however, two summers ago I camped at a spot in Barkley sound among Many law abiding Americans, but the American couple beside me was packaging and freezing their daily catch of salmon and prawns. their full size chest freezer was almost full of seafood, I assumed he was over his limit and I did call the CO's and I don't know what came of it.

Wow your sure quick to judge.Who are you?Sounds like you might be one of those fish pigs Iam talking about?
I live in the OK valley and fish once or twice a year. You tell me I never saw what I saw? I saw for a fact at Island west a guy come in with more than his personal limit with his wife and I saw with my own eyes his 3-4 daughters come running down to the boat dock and help him bring in his catch and it was more than 4.So mr noitall what does that constitute????I saw a american from Utah that was parked at island west come in with halibat almost every day I was there(9)so how many did he catch as he was there for a month. So go f--k yourself.I just found out about this forum today so of course I have a low post count you idiot. What am i supposed to do join today? and then wait for 6 months befor posting you moron? I was there for 9 days and never saw a sniff of DFO period.
