Offshore Fishing 2010

South Bank Friday was okay for us. We kept 5 springs for 3 guys with lots of 6-8 lb feeders released. We mostly used medium herring in a teaser. Biggest was 23. Rat's Nose Saturday more action, bait became a pain early on. Smaller fish, way more coho. Limits of springs, 3 hatchery coho. Fish were full of krill out there. 4" watermelon coyote outfished plugs and big spoons. Tried a small pink spoon but only caught grilse. Got one halibut near there drifting with cheap Portugese octopus from Walmart. Lots of dogfish. Zero wind after 1:00pm despite forecast 25-35. Scope patch and Bonine (meclizine) combo kept averyone feeling fine on a lumpy Friday.

This may not help much for those who are looking for current Ukee fishing updates, but I thought I should post a few pictures from our latest trip which took place July 4-10.

My parents were visiting again and I feel blessed to be able to fish with my 10 year old son and 76 year old dad at the same time - 3 generations is pretty special. My wife is also eager to fish and was out with us most of the time.

Weather seemed to be a lot better than forecasted and we were able fish SW corner a couple of days as well as south bank and a bit in the sound.

Limited out on springs - biggest 27 lbs from SW corner, and son Andrew got a 21 - his first knuckle buster experience - a few tears rolled down his cheaks but he fought the fish bravely and landed it with just a little bit of help.:D

Also brough home 3 coho's, a few lings and 3 halis. Biggest hali was 32 lbs. caught trolling Newcombe Channel.

We had a huge hali on the south bank, but the harpoon was laying unrigged and after having him at the side of the boat 3 times, he broke off and swam back down - lesson learned the hard way.:(

We are thinking of going back this weekend, but it is a full moon and currents will probably be ripping - any thoughts on fishing in those conditions?

Fishing had improved dramatically with lots of Spring in the 20's with a fair number of Tyees coming in. The Coho have also shown up but unfortunately most are nor " anitomically correct" [:p]

Hi guys, I havn't really fished the banks but I hear alot about 7 mile bank and South Bank. I am staying in Bamfield Jule 21-27th I have my own boat and would love to try fishing out there. Would anyone mind sharing the co-ordinates to get out there? I'm not looking for your favorite spots or anything just a general idea how to get out there and I'msure I can figure the rest out...
Thanks:)

If it was 1970 you would draw a line on your chart from Amphitrite Light to where the right nut would be on the phallic shaped contour on a heading of about 150 degrees. Once you clear the rocks, start your stopwatch and follow your compass for 20 minutes while making 15 knots. Have a man on the bow if it's foggy. You could even use a weighted line to sound for a depth around 160 feet. There will be other boats with their nets in the air, so it's probably a good place to start fishing. :) Fish the edge of that crotchy dropoff or up on the plateau.
Or you you can do a search using the tool on the upper right. Hiroshi was generous with spots.
The guys I am fortunate to fish with have learned lots just by being out there. I makes it much more rewarding. You'll get fish.

Great photos Enniberg:)!!! Nice to see the whole family out there. Playing salmon all day will tired a kid out. Good on ya for getting your son out there. What colour is your Arima?

Thanks to Pippen and Sculpin for kind words. Andrew was pretty tired that day and his hand was hurting after his knuckle buster experience.

This is his third year of fishing and he has become quite the fisherman - I run one downrigger and he runs the other one, he does everything including choosing what tackle he wants to use, and this trip his choices of tackle consistently outfished my more conventional choices.

I am wondering if you guys could share your opinion on fishing this coming weekend - full moon is this coming Sunday - how adversely do you think it could affect fishing?

Sounds like the same set up my son and I have on board. He has his side and can work the gear picks his own lures etc. and usually outfishes me. He's having more of a problem with sea sickness this year than he did last year. Going to have to try some of the more serious stuff besides Gravol.

As for the full moon thing............just go fishing;).

Sculpin, get him to try the patch (behind his ear). Can't remember the medical name. Worked for me. Also, make sure he keeps his head up while working the gear.

That is exactly what we will do - should be in Ukee tomorrow for another 3-4 days of fishing. Report to follow when we get back.

Our Arima is a little 17 with a brown stripe.

Medical name is Scopolamine
- Wikipedia says:
Scopolamine has anticholinergic properties and has legitimate medical applications in very minute doses. As an example, in the treatment of motion sickness, the dose, gradually released from a transdermal patch, is only 330 micrograms (µg) per day. In rare cases, unusual reactions to ordinary doses of scopolamine have occurred including confusion, agitation, rambling speech, hallucinations, paranoid behaviors, and delusions.

Odd thing is I have those reactions with or without the transdermal patch:D

Went out on Saturday July 24th to the South Bank with a couple of my employee's and a good buddy of mine. Got out around 9:00 a.m. Hit 3 teener springs right off the bat on green and white hootchies right on bottom. The action slowed down a bit and switched to purple haze with medium herring and picked up a 45 lb. halibut and a couple of springs around 20 lbs.

Would have stayed out there longer but my employee's both got sick so we felt sorry for them and headed just inside the sound and fished Austin Island. Picked up a 22 lber in the first 5 minutes on green and white hootchie behind a red plaid flasher at 70 ft. in 100 ft of water. Lost a cannon ball on the hump (my bad[V]) and decided to call her a day.

Beautiful day on the water. Whales everywhere. Gotta love the West Coast:).
