OFFICIALLY MARCH 1st Halibut Opening

Perhaps the best positive way to look at this that the 88/12 is being reviewed, very much so...if you read the SFI report ( thanks indeed SFI....good job!) the Minister reported that indeed he had been given options to consider. This would never have come to pass if everyone had stayed at home and not supported the Coalition....but instead people came out in large numbers, expressed themselves well, and showed up at the protest rallies as well. We have come a long way from 88/12 or nothing, I think something will come in as a change and improvement, and any change will be welcome. If it turns out they want to close us mid August, and I personally would be surprised if that was the case, then we now know how to let " them" know that is not acceptable.

They would never know what hit them......

I am thinking of heading out on March 1st if the wind looks decent, and was wondering if any knowledgeable hali fisher wanted to jump on my boat? I have rods and gear if you don't, but would like to bring someone that I might be able to learn and thing or two from and hopefully help land some slabs. Probably launch out of Esquimalt Anglers (live a few blocks from here) and head out to one of the banks off the waterfront.

In my opionion, I would vote for a later start, given the choice of that of an early march start bringing on an early closure. Infact, why not have the season June til oct when the weather and water is safe and good instead of March til Question mark ? Or does that make too much sense ?

Exactly !! It does make too much sense..........Unless we get more that 12% of the quota the season will be closed when our best opportunities for water/weather present themselves.

5 years ago and every year they kept putting up a graph chart stating what months the fish were taken june, july, aug was at like 90 % of the harvest feb, march, april, may was at like 5% of the take.... and the reason why is most west coast operations dont really get going till june lots of nasty water in them months as some of you know.

You didnt see what i wrote ???? from feb to and of may the TAC is less than 5% how is that going to make the season longer?????
So you want a 3 month season only cmon guys give yer head a shake whats next a 2 month or a 1 month then a 3 week season my god do you NOT SEE where this is going???? It used to be from FEB 1 all the way to DEC 31 was there never a fear of bad weather then????dont mean to hack on you man but if we take ill accept whatever they give us attitude there really is no hope now is there....

What you may think is ok in your mind may not fit into someones time or shedule!!!
What about a family friend who is dieing of cancer or can only afford 1 trip and who could only make it to our coast during spring break its been his lifelong dream to catch a halibut which by the way is a canadian right (which people are forgeting) and you vote for a june opening season???? OOOPPPSSS sorry you being a canadian NOPE you cant go UNLESS your fortunate enough to be one of the lucky user groups......The poor ******* who has paid taxes supported canada or even fought in a war is just plain SHIAT OUT OF LUCK

Yeah that s a good reason to shut it down even further....

Sorry for the rant and sorry if ive made you upset

Totally agree with you Wolf.

Plus wasent making it a 1 per day limit supposed to help with this bull-sh*t. I mean c'mon people have buisnesses to run. Atleast give us 1 year advanced regs would be nice.

Roger that! If the fish are in the water in viable numbers they will be taken, if not by us then by the commies.
Conceding to further TAC reductions is akin to saying - "Well Mr. Harper, can I bend-over a little more for ya?"

Wolf makes a good point and if some of you think it can't happen it does.
Friend of mine has called (around November) from back east to go fishing for a slab.
He might or might not make it till summer.
Feb 1 open and Dec 31 closed, that's what we need.
Whose fish are they, last time I check they belong to the people of Canada not Slipper Skipper Inc.

How 'bout this: 2 per day, 2 in possesion, 10 per year, open Feb 1st-Dec 31st, 5 days per week (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun) until the 12% goes up. Confiscate the boats and gear of poachers to pay for more enforcement to ensure those that play by rules can continue to play (and for guides, plan an entire season).

I caught 2 last year, and nobody was around to count them BTW.

If I have a chance, I for one, will brave the elements and get what I can before June. I agree with those who suggest that, without significant changes to Recreation Allocation you are in borrowed time after July. I guess it makes for an easier fishery given I can shelve my Halibut tackle in favour of salmon and tuna, if I can learn the basics.

It's all political BS-DFO has never checked me or asked me how many hali I have caught in the 35 years I have fished the coast. They don't have a clue how many hali's sports fisherman get-they don't even ask for a voluntary count -so how the hell do they know when or even if we have or exceeded our politically alloted portion. Vodoo math-you can get statistics to prove anything you want! Damn I'm Ranting!!!
Nothing is official on the Mar opening-right-just a "promise"
