Taking Kids Fishing?

Just curious on any constructive input on this?
My aunt who has worked with disadvanted and troubled youth for about 30 years, and I came up with a neat cool idea for the kids in my area. Not everyone has a mom or dad that fish, but in our eyes fishing at a troubled time in life, can be a molding experience. We're kind of putting together a program to take some kids out fishing, probably two at a time ongoing for about 6 months each year. The one thing that's a bit puzzling is the insurance necessary, and liability coverage. Any thoughts on that? We are not really aware of anyone else doing this, but we think it's a pretty good idea for the kids. I imagine the parents would also have to sign a waiver.
Anyone familiar with this territory? So far we have spoken to the boys and girls club. John Howard Society which deals with troubled teens, and a few other places. Pretty much all have expressed alot of interest. Got an email today from a teacher, who was pretty happy.

How many of past fishing experiences have we forgotten? Pretty much none. With few exceptions all were happy-days.

I commend you for your kind gesture towards disadvantaged or troubled youth.

Good on you and I hope it flies.

the guys who organize the pink festival which takes kids out should be able to tell you. google it and then contact them for the details.

Yup. Call the Pink Salmon Festival organizers.
That is exactly what the Pink Salmon Festival is all about and their slogan is "Take a Kid Fishing"
Skippers in this program need proper insurance and criminal record check.
Mostly Charter Operators that volunteer for this program.

Pink Salmon Festival is this weekend and the skippers meeting was last night so you may want to wait until their event is over before contacting them as they will be very busy this week with this event.

Tips

Yeah not super concerned about how quick it can happen, as realistically, it will be next season before it's running full swing. This is being set up as a full time thing so many kids get the opp to go, and it's awesome to see that there ARE others doing it. Good to see some guides also volunteering some time too :) The insurance and CRC we knew about, but trying to figure out mostly what kind of liability is needed in dollar value.

Thanks for the help so far everyone.

excellent idea sir! Big ups!
I am not sure i understand your question though. are you asking how much liabilty insurance you shuld carry?

What kind of boat did you buy? Title of this tread is "Now That I Have A Boat". So I don't feel the question is off topic. Got any pictures? Guess you will not be renting any more.

17 Foot welded Daigle Alum. Still trying to find a proper trailer though, or at least one in need of a bit of work.
How much Liability do you think should be carried?

Yeah it probably has to be something similar I guess to what the guides / lodges would carry. The boat isn't a hard front like yours though. Center console, but I'll probably make a few modifications over the winter to give the kids a bit less exposure on the not so nice days. Seems built fairly well though and Daigle used the right gauge of Alum to make it strong.
Right now the power is a 75 HP 4 stroke Honda. May change that but not for now.

Yeah I think that's my question Lorne thanks!. I've heard conflicting stuff like 500k all the way up to 2 mill?
Ok. Well the pink festival guys should be able to help you with that, along with your insurance company should be able to tell you what you need.... 2 million should be lots imo, and the difference in premiums between 500k and 2mil is not much

Insurance is cheap compared to the cost of getting sued. Get the most that you can swing and look at worst case scenario. What is the value of life for the potential loss of a child? My guess would be in the millions easily. Nowadays $500 thou. would barely cover legal and court costs, especially if more than one person were suing for damages. (That's a horrible thought but a potential reality non-the-less.) Money could never replace the life of a child, but if there were to be ANY hint of negligence then you could expect the courts to hammer you hard.

The one benefit is if this type of thing is happening anywhere else in North America there will be a set of insurance actuarial risk tables that would show the insurance companies what the approximate odds are of having to pay out a claim. The higher the number of events or occurrences without claim, the lower the risk and the lower the insurance costs.

It sounds like a great idea Brian. Getting the next generation involved is critical to what happens to our resources and our sport. Good on You.
