North Island First Nations declare intent to take control fisheries in traditional waters

The pair of B.C. First Nations say they are done with Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) controlling aquaculture and fisheries in their traditional waters and intend to assert local control.

The Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nations (GNN) — currently based in the Port Hardy area of northern Vancouver Island — have announced the pending creation a Memorandum Of Understanding to assert control over fisheries in their traditional territories.

Walkus asserted the nations will now be instating their traditional laws, stating they are going to “take over that part of legislation that has oppressed us for too long.”

He confirmed that this means they will control the licensing of the finfish industry within all of their traditional territories.

GNN councillor Darryl Coon said it is time for GNN’s chief and council to take the “monumental step to take back what’s rightfully ours, the waters of the Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw territories.

One of the Walkus clan owns about a dozen of the best seiners money can buy. I expect his fleets fishing time will increase dramatically. Now they will have to fight the Fraser FN's as they will certainly be catching Fraser bound chinook and forget about worrying about the last few Thompson steelhead.
At the rate things are going DFO will soon be FNed out of existence.

Thank the anti fish farm lobby, they pushed them into a corner

why I am against pointing fingers and demanding shut downs.

never know what will also come back at your fishery.

First Nations Coalition Calls for Renewal of Salmon Farming Licences
At a news conference on Parliament Hill, the coalition of First Nations for Finfish Stewardship (FNFFS) from coastal British Columbia calls on the federal government to re-issue licenses for regions that choose to pursue salmon fishing. Speaking to reporters are Dallas Smith (spokesperson for the coalition), Isiah Robinson (chief of the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation), and Leslie Walkus (councillor of the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw First Nation). The members also outline their concerns that their rights and economic decisions for their communities are being ignored, and they discuss their recent socio-economic report which highlights the potential impacts to several B.C. communities if the licences are not renewed. (March 30, 2022) (No interpretation)

this is what its all about

In part. This is their retribution for not bowing to their demands.

It is also due to the economic potential of them, and them only, being active in the fisheries under question.
As onefish noted above, they are poised to pounce with industrial strength in that regard, while only answering to their own brand of "management".

Follow the money...

Further to Nogs insight, if they do get them back they’ll have a nice card to play and or sell out to outside interests .

To be honest, I am at the point of believing that we might be able to negotiate and deal much more effective and successful with a fn fisheries government.

I believe that very soon this will be your only choice.
The Liberals will be shown to throw you under the bus in regards to hunting and fishing soon. By the way that will include all fresh water fishing as well.

Crown has to manage resources

Crown has to manage resources
Remember, BC is different than the rest of Canada as no agreements with the FN.
Crown could pass this over to the FN in BC as part of the reconciliation.
Stranger things have happened.

When the Fisheries Minister tells the public that they have to get the FN approval, it says everything.
He did not say that he would have to get approval, he said the public would.

What happened to Nation to Nation?

Looks like the court case is to show who is really running the fishery?
Or do the public really have a right to fish?

Maybe we should all try and purchace a licence from the FN.... Maybe get THEIR approval for a limited marked fishery.

They wouldn’t approve that

They wouldn’t approve that
if we had to PAY for one and the money was partially used for conservation ... why not. FN like money the same as all of us

Who knows eh. Maybe FN's will start ranching salmon.
