NOOTKA QUESTION

The fishing is always slower the first week and very hit or miss, but the largest I have gotten was the first week of July! If you find them you need to fish, as they will be gone very quickly!

When in that area I anchor across the channel from Critter in a small cove. It is marked as “anchorage” on the charts and it’s the same cove Gold River Fish Camp is in. Nice protected area! It’s about 85’ deep in the center, but if you go to the end of the cove there’s a shallower area. Don’t get to close to the shore line! Also, if you really wanted to you could anchor in the cove right behind Critter! Watch for a couple of rocks in the entrance to it!

There is a few crab there, but mostly rock!

Thanks to all for keeping this thread alive. I appreciate all of the information sharing. I don't expect people to give up their "fishing secrets" but it's nice to hear where people stay and get the feedback on various locations. I'm looking forward to fishing a new area this year.
Another question: Can anyone explain the size limits that will be imposed this year in Nootka? Are they any different than those for Barkley?

I am thinking they will be different... look at 2008 regs! DFO is trying to protect the Conuma 4/5 year olds. THEY AREN'T IN BARKLEY! Most of the fish offshore Barkley is headed for the good ole U.S.A.! :D

Wow Charlie you have a ton of info on the Esperanza area!

I have a question for you Charlie. I have an opportunity to fish Esperanza/Ferrer Pt. area either July 30 to Aug. 2 or Aug. 17 to Aug. 21.

In your opinion when do you think would be the best time to go to catch our limits of good size springs?

Thanks for your reply.

The main Conuma run usually arrives the last week of July, first week of August. But it has been running a week or so late the last few years. Both dates are good and I would favor the mid August time frame. Last year was pretty slow for 4/5 year olds. We still caught our limits and most of the fishing was offshore.

I think you're going to still have the 77cm limit inside the surf line and around Ferrer, to protect the Conuma 4 year olds. So, you will have to go offshore to retain anything larger. Or you will be able to retain them inside Hoiss Point down in Nootka.

Charlie: I think you are right about the 77cm limit for the inside the surfline waters. 2010 may</u> see this rule gone. I hope so.

I would plan on fishing off-shore in the 250' to 300' depth areas. Let's just hope that the weather is a little better to us this year.

You can almost count on that 77cm rule again this year although we should see great returns on the Conuma this year that rule is there to protect a number of other west coast fish runs to.

By the way Charlie its Gold River Fishing Lodge use to be 1/4 the size 4 years ago when it was called Gold River Fish Camp. We are located in Galiano Bay but most boats that I know that anchor go up the bay across from us. JMHO

We will offer 25% off from Jun 15th to July 12th (Most consistent weather for off shore fishing)and for the month of September when wild coho fishing was on fire last year.

As far as July 12 to August 31 book soon to get your dates as we are filling up fast.

Nope! All about the Conuma 4/5 year olds in that area... don't believe me... call DFO @ Campbell and ask them! I did! :)

I do most of my fishing on the north end of Nootka Island. But, since I run my boat up the WCVI I have the oportunity to fish all the areas on the WCVI and I try to stop at new places (lodges) each year. Actually kind of neat! I have nothing but great things to say about everyone that I have EVER met up and down the WCVI! I met your owner the first year he put the lodge in... great guy!
