Need some help! I've been fishing Barkley for 10 years and have decided to give Nootka a try this year. We prefer to bring our own boat and provide some of our own meals. I would like some suggestions as to the best place to stay on Nootka where we can do our own thing and yet be close to gas and a restaurant. We would only need a "no frills" room and moorage. Would appreciate any and all suggestions.
Thanks!

I like Critter Cove if you are going to stay in Nootka Sound. If you want to stay on the Esperanza Inlet side, check out Rogers Fish Camp.

Critter Cove has fuel - probably the cheapest in the area. Next would be Esperanza, then Zeballos with Tahsis being the most expensive.

You could also check out Nootka Island Fish Camp, not sure what they cost for self-guided/own boat, but you are closer to the outside there and will save on fuel used.

Hello Lefty! I stayed at Chinootka Lodge. They were very helpful in directing us where to fish and when. There is a lot to learn about local knowledge!
Spring bite times were short, and I appreciated their input!
One can buy gas at Critter Cove even though one is not staying there.

leftyodouol here is a link to Critter Cove. They have exactly what you are looking for. If you want to rent a room by the night, eat some meals in the restaurant and cook some of you own meals Critter will work. Some rooms are very basic where you bring your own sleeping bag and it sleeps 3 people. Other rooms are high end where all that is provided. The food is very good (just ask Holmes) and when you get up after dinner your done.

You can also stay at Cougar Creek camp site if you have a camper or tent. It's all do it yourself, but it's a cheap way to go.

Nootka Island Fish Camp is great as Sushihunter said, it's as close to the outside as you can get. They charge $200.00 per day per person when you bring your own boat.

I really want to thank everyone for your input. This will help a lot. If anyone else has any other suggestions I would welcome them. This is a great website with a fine fraternity of fishermen. We may not always agree on all issues, but in the end we are all bound by a the same passion. Thanks again!

I have stayed at a lot of places up there, with my preferences being:
Flynns Cove: http://www.nootka.ca/index.htm (which I have not stayed at, yet)
Rodgers: http://www.rodgersfishinglodge.com/home.cfm?dir_cat=19404 (They have gas)
Critter: http://www.crittercove.com/
Gold River Fish Camp: http://www.goldriverfishcamp.com/ (gas at Critter and I was there their first year! :))

I would fish the Esperanza Inlet side for sure! Make sure you take your prawn traps. If it was me going up for the first time, I would stay at Rodger's Fishing Lodge. I have stayed there several times. And they do have fuel for their guests! Now if you are up to organizing a fuel drop off... make sure you check out Flynn's Cove. Nice place and will probably be my next stop! Ann can help you with information for the Uchuck to drop off a couple of 55 gal drums of gas! Or, you can make arrangements to have fuel and supplies delivered out of Westview Marina. Kathy has helped me with this in the past! Makes the package complete! :)

There is a really nice cabin in Nuchatlitz that you can rent which is completely self contained, but no fuel. Cost was $600 CDN per week. If interested I can give you his email address.

All the other places are nice, but if staying in Nootka I would recommend Critter Cove for the first trip.

Thanks Charlie! Anyone else have any suggestions on places to stay?

Might try the campsite they call TuTa Marina (not really a marina anymore). It's beyond Cougar Creek on the same road and the crowding is less than what you see at Cougar. The owners haven't pumped a dime into it for years so it is getting more rustic by the day (eventually it will slide into the ocean). It takes a fair bit of backbone to use the launch to pull out anything bigger than 20' at low tide. The price is right but you pretty much have to bring everything (prehaps even a picnic table). The owners are friendly and helpful where possible.

If the budget allows you should check out Hoiss Pt, Critter or Chinootka. They are all very good. The only fuel has been at Critter for a few year now, in the past they ran a cash only operation for gas...bit of a surprise for the credit card guys. The food at Critter is always very good.

Launching at Gold and running down the inlet is a good idea, it is smoother and faster than driving esp is you are staying at a floating lodge (and would have to boat to the final destination anyways).

Anything new planned at Critter for next year Holmes?

Yea... they are going to have fish! :)
Just couldn't resist!

But, really the Conuma run is supposed to be better this year and with the reduction in the commercial fishing... It should be Really Good!

My Escape,
I camped at Moutcha Bay 2 seasons back and had a great time. Easy drive, boat launch, shower etc.. Really not that far from the action at Hoiss and I could still run out to Burdwood and the lighthouse in a reasonable time even in my little boat at 19 knots.

Did I read camping is no longer available there?

Tubber

Yes Moutcha Bay Resort has daily, weekly, monthly camping, a boat launch, marina, ice, bait, two chalets and a cabin and soon New for 2009 the cheapest gas, diesel and propane in Nootka Sound.

Moutcha Bays new website should be up soon. Its now owned by Gold River Fishing Lodge formerly called Gold River Fish Camp located in Galiano Bay / Tupana Inlet in Nootka Sound.....

Cheers Kevin

We only have power till 10 as we are presently on generator but if our development plan goes through there will be a pub, restaurant, 24 hr power, more accomadations and a whole lot more coming in the near future 2010-2011. If we go ahead with the development it will be focused on keeping the natural beauty of the surroundings with min impact and bringing in a first nations theme.

I took my first trip to Nootka last July.

Stayed at Critter Cove: they make it pretty easy and comfortable, gas right there, any gear you need at the store, and the restaurant has good food. I stayed in a cabin on the dock. Next time I'd just pay moorage and sleep on my boat.

About the only negative for Critter is its a fairly long run to the outside if that's where the fishing is. There are floating resorts sprinkled around Nootka Sound, and some may be closer, I'm not sure which is which. Hoiss Point Lodge has a killer location...I figure you could cast buzz bombs from their dock and get into monster springs in the right time of year.

Fishing last year was SLOW in first week of July -- I quickly realized why July 15-Sept 1 is booked solid, yet lots of availability in first 2 weeks of July. The stories I hear is that is turns on like a light switch when the fish arrive.

The other negative for Critter is it may be too comfortable...if you want some of that roughing it outdoors feel, you won't get it there. Camping at Cougar Creek would probably be better for that (5 minutes across the inlet from Critter). I like the idea of anchoring alone in some little inlet, but it is mostly cliffs dropping into deep water from what I could see, so it might be hard to find good anchorages (had trouble finding a place to put out a crab trab...which was useless, by the way).

And finally....bring a spare prop! Lesson learned there...it takes 4 hours to kicker to Gold River from Critter by the way. [:o)]

Good luck!
