Just got this email....

Subject: Tidal Water Sport Fishing Online
Due to a change in the conditions of licence with respect to Halibut, the online system is not yet offering the 2012/2013 (as you know)
I am unable to advise you of an exact date the system will be up and running. My recommendation, at this point, is to check the system daily.

I am very sorry for any inconvenience.

Can you guys please open up the ability obtain a 2012-13 license online. When I pull up my profile it says no licenses are available. I don't want to wait for the last minute and risk not getting a license and then getting a fine.

"There are no licences available for you to purchase
You may have already purchased an Annual licence. If you would like to purchase a licence for your spouse or child, please ensure your current licence transaction is completed first, and that you log out of the system. Each person wishing to be issued a licence must have their own account in this system. "

Brutal. Ok, let me get this straight. DFO can not tell us how many smolts make it through the Fraser system to the chuck just how many were released, they cannot let the guides know within a reasonable period of time when they can take client reservations for halibut trips (or sporties so we can make holiday plans), they can't tell anyone if there is going to be a Chinook fishery in 19/20 until a week or so before it is closed, they can't tell us when they are going to close halibut coast wide...............and now they can't even get it together to sell licenses online 4 days before the year's past is due to expire. All of these screw ups are all within a 60 day window. Now I realize that it isn't one person at the controls, but I am a GM at a fairly large construction company. I can tell you I would have my a$$ handed to me and would be booting my lunch box down the road if I managed this office like they do theirs or even had one of these types of issues go sideways. Am I missing something?

Went into island outfitters today to buy my licence for the 2012/2013 season. Guess what? They don't have them. If anyone doubted the DFO's incompetence I think this is a very clear demonstration. They can make voodoo math if they wish but my math tells me it is less than 4 days until April 1 and not being able to buy a saltwater licence online or in store the week before the new season is a joke.

The only thing I can think of is maybe they are doing a quick re design to include a halibut catch record on this years sport licence. That would mean they actually listened though so that would be out of character for them.

Anyone gotten theirs in the victoria area yet?

(My goal on this forum is to stay positive and not get dragged into all the politics and negativity that plague this forum but man is it ever hard when your dealing with DFO!!)

It was my understanding that the delay was to get the Hali slot rule written in so as to become a condition of license. As far as I know there is no intention of implementing a catch record or annual limit for this year. wonder if there are other changes to be added to the license before printing could take place?

I just called DFO and was told that on-line licenses would be available by April 01.
Paper copies are being sent out to the vendors this week.
The lady cautioned me to call before going to buy a license as not all vendors will have them.

I asked if there was any change to the actual license causing the delays,
answer was "they are exactly the same as last year".

DFO does it again. I would be so proud if I was running the department.

One of my old fishing buddies is married to a woman who works for the federal gubmint-she says that DFO has the worst reputation in the whole place-this in a place notorious for clown shows.

I wrote to DFO March 12th. March 23rd I received my licence package. I have never had a problem with them when I email them early and ask for a receipt.

Never call them. You will talk with a nimrod clerk who doesn't understand your license agreement and will only **** you off.

It is mandatory that you request your package or you'll be on their schedule and you will be lucky if you get anything.

Tried with no success myself at army and navy and stevensons marine. Stevensons even said they have in the past not recieved tidal liscences until one or two weeks after the previous have expired.....

so its not the first time, halibut just happens to be a convinient excuse ;)

I sent DFO an email asking when the online lic. would be available. This is the email reply I received this aftn:

I asked a manager for a letter of Grace period for the weekend as were away from online services, LMAO. What a classic response I recieved. Do you have a printer handy where your headed? haha. Classic.

Did I read that right? A minimum pass is 18 out of 50? No wonder DFO has so many problems 36 percent was never a passing grade on anything. But as they saying goes there is always someone last in the class.

They probably laid off and cut back the department that maintained the site.......

High Five

No all the website admins and around 500 contractors are busy taking "habitat protection" out of every webpage on their site. Last I heard it was going to be a six year job to completely get rid of all the offending mention of those words. Perhaps when that project is completed they can start removing "wild salmon" because there won't be any left.

My supply arrived this morning.

Hard copy licenses will be available at Esquimalt Anglers tomorrow morning. Got them in the mail a day or so ago. The DFO licensing unit is mailing them out as fast as they can. I understand the print production was delayed until the decision on the second halibut (less than 83 cm) was approved--they put additional language on the reverse of the license.
