New Zealand burley

Thanks for posting that CL!

I am actually going to NZ for 3 weeks in January, and have done a bunch of reading on the fishing there. I have a travel set up that I am taking to hopefully find some shore / rock fishing, so we will see how our local lures do down there! I'm bringing Zingers, Buzzbombs, jigs, hootchies, and some stuff to fish bait as well. Apparently their saltwater (and freshwater!) fishing is spectacular, and even as a tourist, you don't need a license to fish the chuck. I'm looking forward to a dinner of fresh snapper at our campsite, of course washed down with a nice bottle of local vino!

Anyone fished NZ before?

Cheers!

When I was doing some research, it took me a little while to realize that "burley" is their term for chum/ming.

I think I will stick to Smelly Jelly!!!
I can think of some kinda fish up here that it is legal to do so and does help a little bit ;)

I have a friend there right now.. Beware of their import and export laws. They are crazy. Plan to sit in customs for awhile.

Inviting tourists is not their thing....

yes I was there about 3 yrs ago ( or was it 4---??) Anyway, I had a great time on both the fresh and the salt.

For the salt I fished out of Mercury Bay on the North Island (Whitianga). Target species were SNAPPA (not snapper!! :-) )and Kingies aka kingfish or yellowtails. It takes a bit to understand the lingo, for instance a cooler is a chilly-bin. And fishermen are fishos etc. But you will love it. If I could afford the airfare I would head down there annually!!

Owen just saw your post----What was your bud trying to import??? BC Bud??? We had absolutely NO problem with Customs or Immigration. And they DO rely on tourism to a large extent--
We had to have have my hiking boots disinfected in case they were carrying bugs and if you have felt soled waders you will get told to loose them-- they can carry didimo.... perfectly reasonable.

We were very well treated. We had folks going well out of thier way to help us on both the North and South Island

Check out this website-- this is where we stayed for a couple of nights http://www.gobush.co.nz/

Incredible place and world class trout fishing

hehehe-- its called business!!! They have fish coming out of the ying-yang. "Dont need no stinking BC salmon-- We have our own!!"

And as far as tourists- I'll rate NZ as the friendliest country that we have had the good fortune to visit!

Thanks for the posts All!

CL, I'm glad to hear you had such a good time! Yes, a feed of Snappa is definitely on my list!

Through both my internet research and talking with some colleagues and acquaintances from there, I understand they are very serious about potential introduced species. And they should be. Quite frankly, I don't think we have taken those matters serious enough!

Anyway, in effort to avoid any hassles, I am actually bringing brand new gear for the trip. All of the tackle (lures, swivels, snaps, line, etc.) is still in their original packages, the travel rod is unopened, and I have a reel that was used once here so I cleaned it all up and brought the new, spare spool.

While the stuff is duplicates of what I have here, I don't feel like having used stuff confiscated, and have to deal with buying it all there. In the grand scheme of the whole trip, it's just a few extra bucks to add. Well, that's what I told my wife anyway .... ;)

Thanks again!
