New wind and wave app

New forecasting tool is live. It updates a 48hr forecast every 6 hours (when national weather updates are released). I put a bit of a spin on it to try and create a more localized version. I'd like to extend the range.. so far I find anything beyond 48hrs to be a complete crapshoot as far as forecasting though.

On map load you will see current conditions based on wind stations, weather buoys etc and then the forecasted weather for that hour. You can scroll or click play to watch the 48hr forecast.

Love your app, check it almost daily and used it many times this summer before crossing Georgia Strait and for double checking the regs. Used it also on a trip up to the Broughtons, very helpful for wind, waves and fishing regs. Keep up the great work!!!

Some new features.. Load the page and then once the white target icon has loaded in the bottom right, click it and the select an area using the radius on screen. If you are on mobile you won't see the radius.. youll just have to click somewhere on the map. It will then take the weather for that area (example i selected SOG where i'd typically cross over).

You will see max and average wind and waves over the next 48 hours. You can also see it in table view or get an AI summary of the upcoming weather.

** The page is loading a little slow on first load.. this should be resolved soon.

Please let me know your feedback!

Okay, maybe its making it too easy for some but I've added a map with the most commonly fished areas in our local waters.

Clicking on the icon gives you some really basic info on the spot. You can also filter by species (work in progress).

I know getting started was always intimidating but i don't think giving away the location is going to have much of a negative impact overall.. as knowing where to go is a very small piece of the puzzle. The real work is getting yourself there and applying what you read or hear.

I'm an Android user and noticed the past few weeks I can't get any data to load on the website? Did you ever get around to making an Android app?

@MikePA I've had to pause the website/app as the server costs have become too expensive and its been a challenge selling any advertising space on the site. I'm hoping to give it another go once we get through some reno's, moving and dealing with a new born.

But its been a pleasure to build and offer something that was useful!

@P999mm - appreciate it. Best thing you guys can do is spread the word and provide me with feedback!

@Srthomas75 you can find it at www.sportyapp.ca

I've added a simple "self report" wave feature. I noticed the forums and facebook are constantly full of people asking for current conditions.. thought this might be useful if enough people use it. Could also add a photo..

Wave height show 2x what the govt weather conditions site shows… but I understood the GC site already measures waves from crest to trough…

@A-a-Ron I heard this from a few members here (see image below). I find doubling the gov conditions produces much more accurate results from my experience.

Example when its 1m on the gov site.. its always much closer to a 5-6'+ chop rather than 3.

Interesting well, ok. Well, I do believe Teddy is wrong though. Right from the govt site it says they are measured top to bottom ie “wave height” per diagram. Also interesting as I find the GC site super accurate. The problem I think is everyone thinks a “2 foot wave” is nothing, but in the SOG that can be quite a sharp chop. Also keeping in mind a 2-foot bouy measurement means that an occasional wave double the size (a 4’ wave) is likely to be encountered.

Also, a true 5-6’ chop would be next to impossible to cross the straight. (ie 5-6 foot average with a max possible of 10-12 feet)

But I guess better safe than sorry. Your site is more giving the “maximum wave height” which is helpful in It’s own way.
