New trailer size for Seasport 22?

Hey guys - I put a deposit on a new tuff trailer at Sherwood Marine.. the question is do I need a 7000lb trailer or will the 6000lb be fine? The seasport hull weight is 4200 lbs. add 1000lbs for Yamaha f300 and merc kicker and I’m roughly 5200lbs before gas and gear.

Both the 7000lb and 6000lb are the same dimensions, but add another $3,000 for the 7000lb trailer. I never tow with a full tank.. the current trailer is 5950lb Venture Trailer

It’s close.. so I need to spend the extra $3,000 or stick with the 6000lb trailer and buy new hp downriggers??

I think the trailer rating is for the GVWR. Gross vehicle weight rating. So you’d have to include the weight of the trailer, in your calculations. Aiming for 80% of any tow (for tow vehicle )or weight rating is a good bet. Then you aren’t maxed out and have a safety margin, for extreme situations.

Have you ever weighed it on a scale? If you have dual batteries, a fridge, a head, a radar arch, an anchor, and a windlass, the weight adds up pretty fast. I have a lighter hull made by NMI, and the boat is over 6,000 lbs with full tanks and a cooler with ice, no beer and 3 cannon balls.

The 7000lb should have electric over hydraulic brakes?

It's a matter of appetite for risk. I got lucky and found a 10,000-pound, 8,400-lb-carrying capacity trailer. I tow to Tofino and over the Malahat often enough that I am happy to have EOH.

I used to have a Trophy 2059 with the Alaska bulkhead. It’s dry weight is 4500. It had a 4.3 and alpha leg. On the trailer, with 1/2 tank of fuel. Loaded out for a day of fishing, not overnighting. It was 6400 lbs on the scale. I’d definitely be looking at the 7000, with EOH brakes.

I think you should just sell the boat on the old trailer to a Seasport and Yamaha admirer that settled for a 19 Skipper but wanted the 22 footer all along, Just not worth the hassle of changing trailers and Barry has enough money. I know this buyer always has cash in hand for the right boat.:D

Barry’s team seem interested in making deals for in stock things right now especially if you buy a trailer and hp downriggers. They aren’t giving things away but I got 6 prawn traps for as good as any price I could find anywhere in BC, including as good or better than Facebook marketplace.

lol I would love to move up to a 24’… not gonna happen tho :) Almost have the boat to where I like it after 4 years

Another nod toward the 7000 lb trailer. I upgraded to the 6000 lb Marlon Karavan for my boat but it has a published dry weight of 3640 lbs. Even then it gets pretty close to the max with outboards, batteries, all my gear on board, dinghy on top, fresh water and fuel tanks full.
I don’t trailer very far with a full fuel tank so I still feel comfortable as it has EoH brakes compared to the EZLoader 5800 lb trailer with electric-only brakes the dealer put the boat on.

This would fit nicely, too... I bought the 8400 for my 24 footer. Great trailer and was a good deal at the time.
