New to coastal fishing and need some help

So I just bought myself a nice sailing boat (used) and it came with a fishing rod holder... I'm in saltwater out of the port of Nanaimo and I know absolutely nothing about fishing in salt. I mean I have fished before but just with a spoon. So I guess I'm wondering what is fun and easy to fish around here! Also how would I fish it? Spoon? Those rubber looking squid things?
Thanks in advance

Sailboat fishing

Pros-large stable platform to fish from, makes long relatively straight tacks good for targeting certain areas.

Cons-difficult to mount a downrigger/cluttered railings relatively poor manoeuvrability overall -and you do need a downrigger to fish effectively on the Inside.

I certainly encourage you to buy a diver as shown (they can be deadly) and learn to use it but they don't get you down much below 40'.

I use that top one all the time in close around reefs....

run a spoon 5 or 6ft behind it

I use a 6 1/2ft stiffer rod for these.....but the reel is an ordinary moocher-type

You can adjust the "trip" setting on the clamp too....

If it bangs bottom around reefs it doesn't hang up like a cannonball...(at least mine haven't so far).......

They work for sure........very good around reefs......

Can't get too deep out in the open though....although it depends on what size you buy....

I think I could max about 50ft deep on mine with the braid if I tried......

the thinner the main , the deeper they'll go......but you don't want to overburden your mono as they can drag-load a bit....although it's not really all that bad at all......

I run 50lb braid on the reel and 30 or 40 lb mono leader on the lure....

The deep six wIth the double sized lead weight (clear model with some tinsel - ditch the tinsel streamer) and blue/silver or green/silver spoon in a #4 or apex/hockey sticks in black or chrome 3-5". It will get u down deep enough and will produce. For a rod I use to use a Xxheavy 9ft st. Croix and run 7-8 foot leaders. 65lb green power pro line on a Abu 7000 series level wind with 30lb leader
Gotta fish tight to the shore line in about 110-90ft of water and around 2knots

I have seen slots of sailboats with manual downrigger and they hook up just as much as any other boat out fishing, that would be the best way to go if u wanna get serious or look for bait balls on your depth sounder and get a linecounter reel and jig on them.

Those aren't lures....they are just a device to get your lure down in the water aways......

There is also a planer called a 'Pink Lady' made by Luhr Jensen which is the same idea but has "auto-trip" on it.

I prefer just using spoons with these planers.....because a flasher on it as well just adds more drag........

You could use bait in a teaser head by itself too
