New Scotty release clip not holding

well holy smokes...I just sent an email to Scotty Customer Service and not even 10 minutes later I've got a call from Gary at Scotty. He's sending me 2 - 48" power clips and some spare pads. This is one of the best customer service calls I've ever had. They're not quite sure whats going on with the quality of the pads but are more than happy to make it right. He mentioned the bead trick and also discouraged using any abrasives on the pads. Gotta give Scotty and especially Gary a 2 thumbs up 5 star review for making things right👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yes, every time I have called Scotty with any problem I’ve had on a trip, the new part waiting on my doorstep when I get home. Above and beyond customer support!!

The clips we were using on last week's charter kept slipping back to the light setting. Got into the habit of checking for that before every drop. They held fine once in the hard mode.
This has been my recent experience with new release clips as well. They hold only in the tighter setting so they need to be checked before each drop.

Thats definitely part of my routine as well. I also have a bunch of new lips on hand at all times. As trophy wife mentioned stripping off line every once in a while helps too.

I bought two new ones this year and have the opposite problem, these things hold so well I struggle to get the line to come out of them.
point the rod tip down at the same angle as the rigger line, straightened rod and reel down. no undue stress on the rods.

I had a first last week. A big hit shook the rigger and broke off the spoon without releasing from the clip. Synchronicity of a deep clip setting, good older clip, and shittily tied trilene knot in 40lb mono.

I ran scotty releases for over 14 years. Finally got Blacks after being told dozens of times how much better they are and from being frustrated with the scottys.

Just buy some Black downrigger releases, they are just a way better release. You can set the tightness. I crank my rod down until the drag starts coming out and it wont release, yet a 2 pound coho or chinook will release it from the downrigger clip. It's a better design. Chamberlains are basically the same, but you can adjust the setting from the release to the rod and the setting from the release to the lure. They're more spendy than the Blacks, but if you want that extra control they are worth checking out.

Saw someone else mention. But take some shop towel/paper towel and bit the yellow pads in it, usually its greasy plastic that causes this. Ive resolved this a few times, others say light sandpaper. Same effect.

There are also Scotty knock offs from China too, no idea what the quality is. I refuse to use products that knock off Canadian manufacturers.

Solution to clips that hold strong, simply tighten your drag and drop the ball while holding the rod at 45 degrees or less. The Line will pull out and if you have a fish on lift your rod up after releasing and start the battle.

All the more reason to keep buying Canadian. Scotty is the best in many areas of both product and business.

I've used the Black's and they do work well but are fiddly. I only used them trolling on a lake, in a little tinny with a manual downrigger. Work fine when you're sitting down with everything in arm's reach. Agree I wouldn't want to try and use them hanging over the gunnel on a sloppy ocean.
