New Scotty release clip not holding

A guy I used to fish with would wrap broccoli elastics around the clip to increase the hold. I've not seen it since or felt the need myself

Twisting your line like that, then having it wrapped over itself, just seems like a recipe for line damage. Plus, without the clip having some movement from the length of mono, I'd assume bites were a little harder to see? Just seems like far more effort than a clip.
