new riggers, Braid vs Cable

ball> scotty clip > 4'ganyon > swivel > braid > downrigger
palomar knot between braid and swivel ,rest can use improved clinch
knot

old school sooke setup:
bucket of concrete > 3/8 crab line > loop onto cleat > elastic band and clothespin for line release
Hand bomb it in when fish on -- great exercise, though not great for solo fishing or winter springs [:o)]

my setup:
ball > snubber > clip > braided line > red stopper beads a few feet up.

But if the red clips slide, then you have trouble, as clip gets sucked right into the downrigger, and I've lost a ball that way. I like Poppa Swiss' idea of tying in a swivel, then some kind of line following it to the snubber/ball connection. Will give that a go!

Or now that I think of it, probably could just tie in a knot of some sort, just enough so red beads can't slide.

Yup , Swivel all the way!! ( 4-6ft Lanyard ( Ganyon - RS...;).. )between the swivel , and ball hook )

double up red beads for the stacked rods above , has worked perfect for me , sometimes they will a slide a slight bit , re adjust when they do , no big deal , also learned the hardway , lost a ball or 2 , lol,,

2 years with Power Pro 200# and zero breakage using 15# balls. Palomar knots and gangen at the ball, counter tested against actual length spooled out and accurate within 6 inches. Drag similar, maybe very slightly less than cable. I should mention that I like to bottom bounce. However I do trim off a few feet every once in a while, just to be safe.

Great stuff on this thread. So... where the heck do you get short lengths of 250# dacron???

I had more of an immediate need for this as I lost a ball a week ago (to a bad knot no less). Dropped over to Trotac yesterday. They don't have 250# Dacron in their fishing section, but if you go over to the rope section, they have some black Dacron (hollow core) that has a foam centre. You can cut it to length and pull out the centre core and it works. Went to try the sheath setup last night but forgot to bring a needle.
