New Rec Closures Proposed Marine Refuge

Looks like if elected the liberals are expanding MPA even more than last government. Good grief so disappointing.

Victoria, B.C. – Canada’s natural heritage is under threat from climate change and unsustainable development practices. It is also under a more immediate threat: President Trump wants Canada’s land, water, and resources. He wants to weaken us so America can own us – but we won’t let that happen. Our approach will draw on the wisdom of Indigenous traditions, the power of modern technology, and the strength of a united Canada.

Today, Mark Carney announced a plan to protect Canada’s natural environment.

“Nature is part of our very identity as Canadians,” said Mark Carney, Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. “In this time of crisis, we need bold new approaches to protect Canada’s natural heritage and defend it for future generations.”

A Mark Carney-led Liberal government will:

  • Conserve nature and biodiversity, including by creating at least 10 new national parks and marine conservation areas, and 15 new urban parks;
  • Connect Canadians with nature by making access to National Parks and Historic Sites free for this summer;
  • Bolster Indigenous stewardship, including by establishing a new Arctic Indigenous Guardians program, and funding Indigenous-led conservation and protection projects;
  • Protect our freshwater, including by investing $100 million in a strategic water security technology fund to advance Canadian R&D, AI, monitoring, and data tools;
  • Enshrine First Nations’ right to water into law;
  • Protect nature where it protects us, including by implementing nature-based climate solutions which deliver measurable carbon sequestration and biodiversity benefits, while supporting community resilience;
  • Clean up, maintain, and protect wildlife in and around our coastal waters, including by investing an additional $15 million to modernize the location, retrieval, and responsible disposal of the ghost gear threatening marine mammals and birds; and,
  • Champion nature conservation internationally, including by stopping illegal wildlife trade across our borders with modern digital solutions.
Ya...let's not blame everything on the Big Orange Boogyman. I touched on all of this twenty plus years ago. They are five years later than they intended upon implementing it all. I provided info back then, it's no longer in me to battle it out in an online forum. The Fed was already moving down this road in the late 80's, as soon as the UN agreements started to be mixed into Canadian government and later turned into law in some cases it was only just a matter of time before UN Agenda 21, 2030 and 2050 were to be full steam ahead.

The sad part of this is that the scope of displacement has not totally been measured, I don't believe that they know the full ramifications of it all. The economy will be severely effected, people will no longer have a career in any related area to fishing. Billions of dollars in boats, trucks, marine products, fishing products, ice plants, canneries, processing, cold storage, food security, volunteers that help maintan abundance in the fisheries, fundraising that help keep many of the fisheries related programs and so many more factors that are applied to all of this will simply disappear.

Any NGO attched to TIDES funding or other similar funds are what to look out for. They have the money to steer this.

There's a un agenda 2050 now? 😲

I'm assuming he is referring to this:
Not specifically, no. It is all related and has many, many moving parts. Many initiatives are related to the UN Agenda, WEF, WHO & big corperate control, and are very intertwined and have many moving parts. Much is connected to most of the issues surrounding water, lands and seas where related to our role. Loss of our access is all but a tiny piece of the directive. Canada has started at home as have many other countries, look at the other countries to see what's next for Canada. Right now many ENGO's are tricking the people into directives that they are not even aware that they are part of. If you are intuitive and have good understanding, then read all the papers that have been publically published from the sources ie, official country documents, UN, WEF, WHO, big corperate like Blackrock and Vanguard to name a couple. It may take years for some to read it all, but I did and continue to. I often use the Wayback Machine to find things.

Anyway, sorry but I am not going to respond to this topic any further as I had spilled my gutts out about it many, many years ago. I can't do it anymore. I now live for today. Yesturday and tomorrow mean nothing to me. Today is the key.

Wow quite the pro commercial campaign from CPAWS. They have commercials running all the time in support of these upcoming MPA. Never seen so many.

That new commercial is on tons of TV channels daily.

Would be interesting to ask question in house of commons how much the Canadian public are paying for these ads on TV and Facebook right now. Here is the link to video.

Cpaws financials from website. Holy crap this government is giving 7 million a year to this, and they even have a surplus!.

Look at the jump in funding with the MPA process time period. 2 million more from 2024 to 2025. Again I wish a MP would jump on this. When we are cutting funding to DFO how can the taxpayers be funding this?

Also look at the foundation funding jump? Who is that?

What we protect, the ocean gives back immeasurably. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) create safe havens for marine life and coastal communities to thrive together, supporting healthy habitats, fisheries, and local livelihoods.

MPAs are parts of the ocean that are biologically or culturally important – for example, deep sea coral reefs, estuaries and fish nursery grounds – where harmful activities are banned to protect habitats and help marine life recover.

We’re all in on marine protected areas: We know they will work because we have already seen the benefits. CPAWS produces research, spearheads community and industry partnerships, and is at the table with governments at every level across Canada to ensure that more of the coast and ocean is protected.  With the voices of supporters like you, we’ll continue the push and hold political leaders accountable to make sure that our coast and ocean are well protected. Together we can secure the survival of marine life and our ways of life along Canada’s coast and in the deep ocean.

For Canada to have healthy oceans, land and freshwater alongside a thriving economy, CPAWS urges the federal government to:

  • Invest long-term funding to maintain momentum and partnerships built under Budget 2021, including stable and sufficient federal funding for Indigenous partners.
  • Align all marine protected areas with the MPA Protection Standard by closing regulatory loopholes and prohibiting destructive activities like bottom trawling, oil and gas exploration, dumping, and deep-sea mining inside the boundaries of marine protected areas.
  • Ensure that protected areas are large enough to support ecosystem recovery and sustained with robust monitoring.
  • Implement cooperative management in new and existing protected and conserved areas, to ensure that Indigenous peoples can achieve effective and meaningful participation in decisions that affect them, their communities and territories.

CPAWS hopes these gaps will be addressed swiftly to ensure protected areas fulfill their role as a cornerstone of Canada’s climate and biodiversity strategy. Just as importantly, they must deliver real benefits for people—supporting livelihoods and the vibrant communities that depend on them.

“This is a defining moment for Canada,” added Schwartz. “We have a clear path to protect 30% of nature by 2030. Let’s seize it. Protecting nature is crucial to securing Canada’s future. Our window is closing—we can still create a legacy that will benefit generations to come, but the time is now.”

It is hard to argue with these steps.

I don't honestly care anymore. There are like a handful of anglers and public that get it. The rest of them have head in sand.

Just like the whales and all the other closures coming. People are going to be shocked when our opportunities are gone.

This is nothing new.
Apathy is the greatest single weapon working against anglers (and hunters) and the government well understands that.
To the point they count on that and employ that understanding as a tactic to deal with them.

Been that way for as long as I can remember.

the standard response on this site is " it does not matter who you vote for they will all do the same"

my response to that is under the conservative government we had 2 a day, 365 pretty much coast wide

the counter point to that is conservatives stonewalled first nations resulting them going to court and getting favorable court rulings

my counter point is, Liberals chose to settle some of those court cases lol

their counter point is Harper removed environmental protections, causing fresh water declines and habitat loss

Liberals reversed some of those changes and

Conservatives were fine with fish farms, Liberals removed them

Conservatives cut DFO budget, Liberals reversed some if it, though now it looks like the Liberals are cutting it over the next 5 years

Reality, at this point in time the people of BC are way more concerned with their homes and jobs. The NDP have created the legal mess around if you actually own your home.
That is way more concerning than a few fish.
So, to deal with this you need two elections. One in BC and another national.
Unless you get rid of both BC parties and elect OneBC there appears to be no hope.

Then all of BC is in very big trouble.

On the short term forecast these appeals and court cases might just get held up for another 20 years. Which is even more frightening. It could roll that direction. The uncertainty might just stay uncertain.
